My friend has a turndown vband exhaust that I made for him using a vband and 3" SS pipe. He needs a hanger made for it and I don't have any SS that I can use as a hanger, but I do have some round stock of mild steel. So what would be the correct way to weld this up?I have the MIG with regular wire, or use flux? Or tig it? Which type of wire? This is the turndownTorchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:usually those go on the back of the Microwave- makes it pretty hard to open the door iffin' ya weld it that wayJust mig it since you are using Mild steelEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:you could tig it with 309 Filler wire_______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY... I DID IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Reply:+2 for 309 filler, or Hastelloy W if you just so happen to have some.
Reply:If you have TIG, use it. You can buy the smallest quantity of wire, 1lb. 1lb of 309L filler is going to run you close to $20. Buying even a small spool for a MIG welder is going start at $45.But why do you need to put a hanger so close to a V-Band connection? There is a lot of strength there already.
Reply:Why bother with SS filler wire when the hanger is going to be Mild steel?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Do bother with 309L wire. Welding stainless to mild steel with other steel or stainless alloys will create a microstructure loaded with martensite which is very brittle. Stainless to mild and dissimilar stainless alloys should be joined with 309, 310, or 312 alloys which are loaded heavily with nickel which improves the microstructure of the weld after welding. |
