I was wondering what steps and what primer and paint you guys use on your projects. Also where you guys get the paint at.I do do this for a living I just want to know for my own stuff. Thanks
Reply:I have had good luck with basic Rustoleum Hammer Finish paint for a quick paint job.  The silver hammer finish looks good, seems to be pretty strong, and doesn't need much prep at all !!!!!! They say you can spray it straight over rust.Last edited by BurningMetal; 01-03-2010 at 09:50 PM.
Reply:It depends on the project. For General purpose projects I like Rustoleum thinned with spirits, naptha, or acetone depending on the weather. The thinning is for spraying, do not thin for brushing or roller. For custom colors I use XO Rust  from Ace hardware stores only because custom mixing is only a mile down the road. The XO Rust  is like Rustoleum but I think it's a bit thinner. If it is going to set outside I'll put in a can of Velsper hardener for Alkyd enamels. That can be found at Tractor Supply. Really any brand of alkyd enamels will be about the same. Cheap and very tolerant of less than perfect prep.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I used Valspar Kubota orange from Tractor Supply to paint my last project. Never again. Set out in the hot sun last summer and it looks more like a lemon than an orange now. Never had any paint fade like that did.

Reply:Become a friend with a powder coated. Trade welding for coatings. Or invest a litle money with him and when he has your coloor being shot he will call you and do it for FREE like mine buddy does.
Reply:i use ospho (phosphoric acid) and then paint it a day later. found it to work alright with tractor implements and trailers.I break things for a living...
Reply:Sandblast to white metal, International 300V primer, International 990 top coat or 262 for areas that need impact resistance.  In areas of questionable surface preperation, we start with PPG Amerlock Sealer.  It's an epoxy that basically glues the rust and paint down so it can't flake off.

Reply:We use oil base Rustoleum. Cheap and last forever.
