My "shop", a little 20x20 pole barn, is freaking cold. I came across some free 1.5" pink foam, the kind for laying under a rubber roof. Put it in the shop today, but now my shop feels even smaller (darker color), and I'm worried about the fire hazard with sparks and such. Thinking about some thin galv. sheet or thin aluminum to hang like sheet rock for safety reasons. Drywall sounds nice but moisture worries me in the long run. Anyone out there have  any suggestions, experience with the same thing?Just another clown trying to be cool
Reply:If you don't have a dirt floor, and your roof & walls are water tight, then dry-wall will be fine. Plus its fire resistant.
Reply:You'd need to compare prices, but white steel roofing panels might be an option. I've seen them in two shops, and they hold up great. Not smooth though.
Reply:I've never seen it burn, but when we used that stuff for the concrete slab here, the contractor said that stuff is very flammable so I would look into that or just not weld till you got it covered up.
Reply:It's not really flamable till it turns to liquid. My name's not Jim....
Reply:I'd go with 26 or 28 gauge Galvinized Sheet metal or Aluminum.  The stuff is dirt cheap and super easy to install seeing as how you have lot's of 'wood' to screw it into.  I put it in my shop (over top of my drywall) and It seems to do a decent job of reflecting heat and keeping my smaller work area somewhat warmer, even when it's -20 or so outside....Cheers,/Jman..Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:I just hung OSB over fiberglass insulation.  And painted it gloss white.  It reflects the light really well.
Reply:I hung OSB too. At $7.52 per sheet you can't beat the price. If you are really concerned about the fire hazard you can buy "fire resistant" paint for any area of concern, regular exterior paint for the rest.

Reply:I picked this up off the web:OSB has some advantages over plywood: OSB is generally more square and has smaller dimensional tolerancesIt can be manufactured into panels of up to 8' x 24', far larger than plywood There are no soft spots such as those that can occur in plywood OSB is made from smaller (often farmed) trees reducing the demand for old growth timber OSB has greater shear strength than plywood; the span rating, nail pull and screw hold are all roughly the same It can be $3 to $5 a panel less expensive than plywood. For a typical 2400 square foot home, OSB will save about $700 if used as the subfloor, sheathing, and roof decking instead of plywood. The major disadvantage of OSB is that if it gets exposed to significant amounts of water or moisture, the edges expand by up to 15%. . .especially if they are cut edges. This swell will then telegraph onto the shingles or some flooring. When plywood gets wet, it expands evenly throughout the panel, dries more quickly and shrinks down to its original size more rapidly than OSBWorking on cars and bikes is my hobby, learning to weld the pieces together is my quest.
Reply:Was just at my local ACE hardware and found this stuff, a little salty ($$$$) but would be slick on a wall or two, eh? Too rich for my blood!  I'm leaning towards thin sheet on the lower walls and 1/4" drywall above. Thanks for the input guys.Just another clown trying to be cool
