Can any CWI certify for AWS?

I have a CWI who has offered to come to my house and certify me.  Can he certify me AWS?I mean can he legitimatly do this?  I need to get certified but I don't want to just pay someone off because I know that someones life at one time or another will depend on my welds being up to par.  I know if it sounds to good to be true it probably is, but right know I have to fly from L.A. to Sacramento just to test at a test site listed on the AWS website because the one here in L.A. has too long of a wait.

Reply:be careful getting your certs from all over the place, and ill tell you why...i guy i work with was from los angeles and had tons of certs with 232he came up here for work and had to redo all his certs, and recertify to d1.5 not d1.1D1.5 is bridge code and is a harder test to pass than d1.1anyways im sure you know what your doing and and that you are getting the proper certs and all that, just some food for thought i guess.

Reply:Jimmy,I work for a contracter who is contracted to do some work that includes welding.  In the specs it states the welding must be done SMAW with 7018 by an AWS D1.1 certified welder and inspected by a CWI. The person who has offered to certify me at my home is the CWI for the job.  If I were to take him up on the offer could he then test me and send in the affidavit to AWS and I pay the $30 filing fee and become D1.1 certified in the eyes of AWS as well as get my cert card?The CWI assures me that it is a true test to D1.1 specs not a pay off.  I just don't want to pay him the money to find out that it is a waste.  The work is for a medical center so everything we do on the job is under a microscope.

Reply:My company is reimbursing any cost I endure. The wait to get into the accredited AWS test site is 4 weeks in L.A. (Westminster) but if I fly to Sacramento I can walk in. I just want to do whatever is fastest.  I am the only welder in my company and I usually do handrails and don't need the D1.1 cert but if I get it I can have more work and be at home waiting for work less.  I have already passed the L.A. City written Certified Welders test but the specs for this job require AWS specifically so I put the L.A. City practical test on the back burner for now.So am I best off taking the CWI up on his offer in your guys opinion?
Reply:Lomitawelder,     From what I've seen is that the L.A. City practical test and the AWS D1.1 cert testare the same thing.  You take your AWS D1.1 test results (cert papers), being that you past vert and OH, in a sealed and stamped (CWI stamp) envelope and turn it into theL.A. office where you took your written test.  The two combined will give you your L.A. City weldors license.  As far as testing why not try calling some of the local community colleges, many should be able to test you and certify you to AWS D1.1.  I went to Fullerton College for welding and the teacher the is a CWI and does AWS certifications.In the time I was going to class there would be people from outside the class takening weld cert test.

Reply:Lomitawelderhere is a link to aws welder certification, this is the only way you can get a certification card strait from aws as I understand it (and yes it's from aws).
