Seems that I have an issue when it comes to tacking two pieced of, well, anything w/ my TIG at 9o* angles. I know it's not the machine, it's my lack of experience that are causing the issues. I was wondering if some of those who are more experienced than I, could drop a few hints on how not to blow the edges of the material all to bit and get the weld started w/o looking like a rookie did it?  Once I get it ( finally ) tacked, the weld itself comes out OK, but it's that first start out that bites me every time. Reply:your gonna wanna point the heat towards the thicker plat always but since there the same most likely, point the tungsten toward the botom plate. if in the high center or not enough on teh bottom the the edge will melt away first.6G zirconium 702 GTAW 2" xxheavy6G P.E.D. carbon steel GTAW 2" xxheavy3G titanium Gr. 2 - Gr. 7 GTAW up to 3/4" 3G 316L stainless GTAW up to 1" 3G carbon steel GTAW up to 1" 3G Hastalloy GTAW up to 3/4"1G tantalum GTAW up to .060"
Reply:If the fit is good I just get the amps set in the right range for the material, hit the pedal to the floor and let off slow.  Instant tack. Im not really sure what you are asking, if your blowing the edges then dont tack at the end of the piece, start inside it a bit.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:when i was tacking 11 ga material at school, i was just using about 50-60 amps... just enough to start a puddle, and that was it. it gives just enough strength to the joint until you can crank the heat back up and weld it in the proper range. Later,Andy
Reply:"It is a simple thing, once you get the hang of it." That's about the answer I got....... I never really got the hang of it.  "Sometimes it doesn't really wet together." he says, and I'm like, "Yeah, that's what I mean!" City of L.A. Reply:I will have to try those ideas listed above. I agree tangle, more torch time cant hurt anything except the electric bill...Syncrowave 2ooMillermatic 21oHypertherm 6ooAnd a grinder to grind, grind cuss and grind

Reply:Doing an autogenous fusion tack with a fillet weld can be pretty tuff to get started on.  I might suggest laying a piece of filler rod in the corner, and point your tungsten at the intersection of the two plates to the end of the filler rod.  When you strike the arc, push the rod into the puddle as it forms, then pull back.  Sturdier than a straight fusion tack, and you don't have to worry about "blowing" out the material.I r 2 a perfessional
