i was just wondering what is the diffrence between gas and gasless mig welders. and if one is better than the other.
Reply:the gas(clear  ,odorless) is what shields the weld (steel)  from the air (oxygen) which will contaminate the weld with oxides (crap ).The gasless wire (fluxcore) is hollow and contains a flux which makes a smoky cloud that  does the same thing.Gas gives a cleaner looking weld, the fluxcore has to be cleaned off similar to stick weld.Fluxcore gives deeper penetration. I'm learning in welding there is seldom a simple absoute asnwer as to what is better. Therre are many cvariables to consider.Its not what you dont know that becomes a problem..,its what you dont know that you dont know..enjoy..
Reply:Mig (gas) in generally best used indoors or outside in low wind. When the wind blows away your shielding gas the weld is crap. It is great for sheet metal such as auto body work. As said above there is little cleanup involved so multiple passes are somwhat easier as well as perp for paint etc.Fluxcore is good for outdoor work. Basically a continious stick welder. There will be smoke and fumes like stick so it is not as good indoors without good ventelation. As said above there is cleanup required to remove the flux.Most Mig (gas) machine can run flux core wire. Depends on how thick wire the machine will run usually. Some fluxcore machines can not be adapted to gas use, usually the really cheap imports. They lack the internal parts to trigger the gas. You do need to switch the leads between processes as they run on different polarity. just switch the ground and gun leads to the opposite lugs.
Reply:Use the right shielding gas and there is almost no spatter with mig. No flux to clean off. Flux core produces some spatter, especially the 110V machines. You have flux to remove but not as much as with stick. You can produce the same strength weld with either.

Reply:If you vastly oversimplify it, yes. But it's stickwelder with adavntages and diadvantages over standard stick. It all depends on what you plan on trying to do.
