Heres a holder I made for the grinder. Friend powered coated it for me Attached Images
Reply:Nice touch with the powdercoating!
Reply:Great idea......I think I will try making one this weekend.I think I even have the Edelbrock sticker also.
Reply:Nice and handy hangar.  Do yourself and your fingers a favor and put the guard on your grinder so you can continue to use it with nothing bad happening.  Your fingers will thank you."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:first of all, nice job.  secondly, is it really safe to stress the cutting/grinding wheel like that constantly?  also, where's the guard?

Reply:I removed my guard too. Ive got several of those. Made them from aluminum when I was working for a boat manufacturer. They work great.
Reply:No guard either. You will never be able to do every thing I need to do with a grinder if the guard is on it. There is a skill to grinding with a grinder just as there is with most pieces of equipment. The guards are for people that don't have that skill.

Reply:I have been bit by a grinder before, but like others have said, there is some stuff you simply can't do with a guard, like use 6" wire or grinding wheel on a small grinder. Some times you need to get into tight places, and a big wheel on a small grinder is the only thing that will get you there.

Reply:I would also suggest that when you use your grinder, you wear safety glasses and a full face shield.

Of course we all know it's an OSHA violation, but no one had a better solution, so that's what we did. Kinda one of those things where all the boss can tell you to do is not get caught, since they don't have a better solution.

Reply:Nice project and seems to work better than my toss it on the shelf or in the toolbox system.  As far as the guard goes I have one grinder without the guard on it just for those situations where the guard gets in the way. For most of my grinding operations I use the grinders with the guard on them.Regards,Eric H. Reply:Bob/Boostinjdm,I think you're confusing "skill" for "stupidity".Your comment about guards on grinders was truly an irresponsible statement.Even the most experienced fab guy never knows when an abrasive disk is going to "blow up".  If you think you can "look at" an abrasive disk and tell when it's going to "disintegrate" then you're just blowing smoke.Grinders come with guards for a purpose.  If the tool cannot do the job it was intended to do, then find another tool that can do the job safely. This is not even worth debating.  If you choose to be stupid, please do not "brag" about it.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:SundownIII,If you're blowing up disks, then you're doing something wrong.  I'd say that falls into the "skill" category. The guards are there to cover somebody's ***, and it ain't the operator.  If you want to use the guard then go for it.  I'll leave mine in the box.I enjoy reading most of your posts so I'll leave it at that.  No need to start a war.My name's not Jim....Well, that was a really good method to hang up angle grinders.  In fact, I had to build my own, just with a few additions.  I know the cable cleats aren't the same size, but I didn't really care as long as they allowed me to wrap the cables up out of the way.  I didn't use a torch or a welder, just a bandsaw, compact bender, angle grinder (to take of sharp edges), milling machine (to mill out the slots for the wrenches), drill and tap. Reply:Here are some examples of how I solved the grinder on the bench problem. I formed them on the vise so the angles are a little different one to the other...but you get the idea. Copied the idea from the brackets that Tractor Supply had grinders on their display rack in the store. These are intended to work with the guard. Simple and effective. Reply:And I guess my "analattitide" shows through here...but since we are talking grinders...I tire from have to sort through flappers and grinding disk looking for what I need which I usually just kept loose in a box...so I used a little bit of 18 gage plate and some machine bolts, along with some dishwasher spray wand hose to make a stacking system for them. Kinda corny design but I now know when I need to replenish my stock. I just slip this under the bench. Attached ImagesMiller MM 211Miller 375 XtremeO/A
Reply:"Anal-itude" ..... good word ..... gawd, that's disgustingly neat.  nice work, though.Good work on all of the grinder hangers, guys.  I especially like the one with the extra brackets for the wires. On the guard debate, all I can say for myself is that I mainly run it with the guard on - I've been hit by a couple of shattered discs, too, and it ain't fun.  On the flip side, I have also pulled the guard off a couple of times, because there were a few tight spots that the guard prevented me from getting into.  Quick grind, replace the guard, it's all good.  I'm not a newbie when it comes to grinding, but for my own peace of mind, I'd rather have the thing on.......
Reply:Most of the time I do actually run my grinders with the guard on...both of those were off due to some of the work I was doing with them.  The diamond blade was being used to cut concrete in an area where the guard was stopping me from getting a flush cut.  The flap wheel had the same problem because I was using it to descale the inside of a 12" diameter pipe In both of these cases I was wearing my torch leathers, making sure I was out of the way of the discs axis of rotation and wearing a full face respirator with balistic lenses...just figured I'd clarify that I'm not an idiot when it comes to keeping all of my butt intact --Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:That disk storage is great.I need to rig up something similar to hang on the wall.I am also sick of rummaging through a draw full of assorted disks and finding out that i don't have the one i need.

Reply:I don't mind using my demolition saw to cut big steel sections sometimes. Its also handy for concrete with water attachment.  350mm blade.
