Plan to weld old break drums around carbon steel pipes (through the middle opening) which would provide a stand with resrevoir filled with water to keep ants out of bee hives. Have both mig and stick. Am assuming that 70-18 rod will suffice, can anyone suggest otherwise? Machine setting perhaps?

Reply:Either mig or stick will work if you have the right equipment. You don't list what sort of mig or stick machine you have available.Denny has had good luck with "cold mig" on some jobs.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=36370Castweld here has done all sorts of cast to steel projects. A search will bring up tons of reading on his projects. Hopefully he'll chime in on how he'd go about this. He'd probably be the #1 person here who I'd listen to if I needed something like this done. Mig, stick, brazing... he's done it all.http://weldingweb.com/search.php?searchid=3089051Usually you want to keep the iron as cool as possible to prevent cracking. That or you preheat everything ( not just a small area) and let it cool slowly. Sounds like all you really want to do is make a water tight joint that will hold up a medium amount of weight, so super strength isn't as big an issue as keeping it from cracking and leaking. OA brazing would probably also be a good choice and not need as much specialty stuff as stick or mig.Last edited by DSW; 02-08-2012 at 11:59 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Doesn't sound like it's too critical so cracking is acceptable. Treat it like a cast iron to cast iron weld and have at it. Weld with one of those nickel rods or 309L stainless. |
