dumb chromoly question

Reply:no simple ways.  Sorry.  If you grind it, it should throw sparks that look very from those that come from mild steel; just like cast iron does.  But this won't tell you for certain that it is 4130 or any of the other chromoly alloys.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Pre heat it to 250' just at a precaution...Cr will crack.  If it is steel...the preheat won't hurt it to badlyJonesy

Reply:Do the spark test, ring test, file test, do you have a rockwell tester?Have a sample cut and polished at a lab, they can tell you from what it looks like under a microscope.Or keep some mouthwash handy for all that taste testing!!
