having some difficulty with them, im running 1/8 7018 at 100 amps. i know i need to slow down and stay in the puddle for a second or two. still kicking my butt tho.
Reply:hang in therepause on the sidesalthough the bead progresses vertically, the movement is more side to side..

Reply:Run a Z motion pausing on the sides and watching the puddle.
Reply:The key to being able to weld vertical is to be able to see and read the puddle. Pause on the sides and wait until the puddle catches up to the arc, then quickly move back across the middle and pause again until the puddle catches up and repeat.Too many guys simply try to do a timing pattern and spend equal amounts of time on the side as they do crossing the middle. That means since you cross the middle twice, you end up with a big bob of extra metal in the center or you have undercut on the sides where it didn't fill before you started back across.Lots of good threads on vertical here to read up on and look at picts and suggestions.Picts would help greatly to see just what you are doing wrong. Post them up with notes on what rod, size of rod, material thickness, amps used etc are and we can make suggestions on where to concentrate. All of this however is pointless if you haven't yet learned to read the puddle, be able to differentiate slag from molten steel, and be able to properly manipulate the rod to get consistent results and control the puddle..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:That works. I was thinking you were talking about learning at home and had your own machine. Are you in a class program or just trying to learn more when you get the chance? There are just so many " lowest bid" and "Gov Contractor" jokes  to go with your last statement I don't know where to begin. .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:if you angle your plates about maybe like 65 degrees and start practicing at that angle then when you get comfortable . go to 70 or 75 degrees weld until you can control your puddle do this until your straight up and down. just a basic practice technique .  also have you at each angle i"d increase your heat by 5 degrees so you adjust your technique when your welding . when you change angle  lower temp and then when comfortable inrease 5  . so on and so fourth
Reply:Are you running straight plate for practice or beveled plate with backing strip or open root? I always run about 95-100. Everything but they last fill and cap I run straight over then back over but slightly higher. Last fill and cap side to side hold the sides till you see your puddle start to cover the walls. If just practicing stringers I just wiggle a little bit on the way up.
