How to calculate nozzle pipe length?

Is there a formula out there for this?I've learned many formulas, but this one would be incredibly helpful to know. We've installed a new Vernon pipe burner that lets us do saddle cuts on pipe (and about 7 million other things it can do). We only have 6 welders, so it's more or less cut the pipe as you need it and there's no dedicated user running it.I'm having trouble figuring out exactly how long to make the pipe without taking an educated guess.The length I'm trying to get is the longest point of the nozzle.Example; Heat exchanger (or anything that gets a nozzle really)Let's say The nozzle will have a 16" height from the nozzle centerline. The Shell is 24"The nozzle pipe will be 8.625" OD.So in order to figure out the shortest length of the nozzle... it is 16-(24/2).That will give us a height of 4", at the shortest part of the nozzle which would be on the top of the shell centerline. That's useless to me when cutting the pipe though. So now how to you figure out the longest part of the nozzle? It's hard for me to explain... But the sizes of the nozzle that go down the shell are what I'm talking about. Does that make sense? How do you figure that out?I understand you also have to take in to account gap you are leaving for the weld to the flange, and if the nozzle is set-through the shell or not... But we can leave that out for now.

Reply:Ordered it as well.. thanks! I didn't realize it was a pocket size book. I thought it was a full size from your picture.Any other useful books that have things that book doesn't cover?
Reply:Awesome book! It was required when I went to college in 94. I am on my second copy now, wore the first one out.
