appreticeship program?

I'm trying to get accepted at my local welder and pipefitter union and was looking for some insight of what starting out in the apprenticeship program is like? It's a five year program and I'm also wondering if anyone can tell me types of jobs out there, the best paying ones, and where they're mainly located? Me and my wife live in Georgia, but are willing to relocate if the pay is right.
Reply:Are you trying to get into the UA?  It varies with the different locals and regions, to get a true answer you'd really have to question a member of the local you're trying to join or the instructor(s) of the program.  Some programs you work and go to school at the same time, some you don't.  It all depends.  There's really work all over if you have a traveling card, but if you're actually going through 5 years, you won't get that until you're a fourth year apprentice.  Just go by the local and talk to the business manager.  If you don't know how to weld or fit, then you've got a while to be worrying about work, so mainly focus on the program.
Reply:Hi, how good of a welder are you ??  Some LOCALS did have a welding hybrid program where I think you go to welding school on your own time daily . After so much time if you were able to pass the certification test you were able to enter as a 2nd or third year. Just as  Zca4 said about calling the locals; each is different.
