I graduate from Tulsa Welding School in 2 weeks.  My ultimate goal would be to work for a pipefitters union in Austin TX, Portland, OR or Denver, CO.  I know its not easy getting into the union, as I would probably have to go the apprenticeship route (which I dont mind at all).  My only thing is, I live in Jacksonville, FL right now.  Would my best bet to be just to work around here for a year or 2, save up some money then move out that way and try and work in a shop while I wait for an apprenticeship spot to open?  Im 26, and just dont want to be almost 30 and find out Im to old to get into the apprenticeship program.  Obviously if I move out to any of those and can find higher paying job than what the union could offer, Id take it.  I also take it that you have to be a resident of the state to apply for an apprenticeship at a union?I dont have parents handing me money, unlike the majority of people I have gone to school with.  Im just tired of living in Florida and want to move west.  Any advice would be great!  If it helps any, Ive lived out west before, Im prior-military and love to travel, so being "homesick" isnt in my vocabulary.  Thanks!Last edited by Nightman_Cometh; 02-20-2012 at 02:03 PM.Read my welding blog:http://weldeveryday.wordpress.com/

Reply:Oregon UA is 290 I think but there is a big job at intell right now and they been putting boomers to work. Might be an opening for apprentices, with that tech school under your belt you should rank higher on there list. Boilermakers are always lookin for good welders. We dont make you starch your shirts either Good Luck Dont get discouraged it can take a bit to get in and they own your butt when your an apprentice but the pay off is well worth it.
