I am trying to figure out what the actual name is of those overhead lifting quick release devices is. Basically its a device that goes in between your winch/ crane and your load. It has a pin you remove to arm the device, than you pull on a lever (from far away, through the use of a string) and the device instantly releases the load. I dont know what practice use would exist for this in the shop, but in my case I need to drop some weights onto a rope for testing purposes, and I cant exactly just release the overhead winch when its holding a load, so I need an intermediary. It does not need to be very strong, the weights only weigh 200 lbs.
Reply:you can actually make your own. they use them for trebuchets and catapults all the time. They can be very simple of very complicated. What you're asking about is like what the mythbusters use to drop cars and what not from cranes and buildings.  Something like this http://www.sweeney-special-effects.c...catalog.php?QR.There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Oh - I was going to say a lifting hook sold by HF.  Those would be the kind of thing to "release" suddenly -DaveXMT304 with: 22A Feeder, or HF251 Hi Freq DC TIG air cooled
Reply:One such device like you are asking about is called a "Pelican Hook". This is not a brand name, just a type of quick release for a line under load. A rope or heavy twine is pulled to make it release.
Reply:If you do that, I would suggest hanging some weight above the quick release too, to keep your spool on the winch from getting all messed up when the rope springs back. The pelican hook is a good idea.  No safety catch for those, but you would need to find one made to release under load (some styles will not).
Reply:I thought it was called a "Wife"!
Reply:This may work for your application, obviously not for industrial applications.  The one in the link is listed to be a 1650# work rating.  I was looking for these for towing a equipment filled canoe and wanted to be able to release it if capsized.  I didn't get one so I can't tell you if the direction of the release pin would work from your location on the floor.  http://www.mauriprosailing.com/Ronst...RONRF6130.htmlGood luck
