I have a Western snow plow with the heavy duty skid shoes, that are pretty worn. I was wondering if anyone knows what they are made of? And if I can build them up with weld? I do have a spare set, but I thought it would be cool to try to save these. These are the ones I have."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Do you want to hard face them?If not 7018 would suffice..Fisher's are cast steel but I take mine off and throw them away.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I run a rubber cutting edge on my plow. I bought it new in 2001 and never even had to adjust it. Yeah, I am a firm believer in rubber edges. Not only for the longevity, but also because there is no shock, wear & tear versus steel edges. Anyways, a rough area, where I plow, finally tore a little of the edges, so I flipped it. I must have not had it adjusted perfectly, because one skid shoe was wore alot more than the other. And all the wear happened right after I flipped the edge. So after all the padding I've done lately in school, I figured why not try it. And I do have a bunch of hardfacing rod from a while back so I can even try that, too. I just didn't know if these were weldable. How would S-6 work? I have PLENTY of that I wanna use up."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I have used 7018, and Mig. It all works, but the price of new ones says just toss em unless you are just screwing around.I did hard face a few skid steer snow blower skis, but never heard the results.Around here they don't use them on black top. I plowed for 4 years and still have a new spare set. I no longer own the truck or plow.Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Yeah David, mainly just screwin around. I do have a brand new spare set, but I can buy a lot of wire for the price of them. I think I'll try it. I will post up here when I do."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:If they were mine I would build them up just because I love to weld. I would use whatever I wanted to use up or practice with maybe use a low hydrogewn process. With wire it might be faster but i wouldnt want to waste the gas. Id use some 7018 or 8018 for build up and hardface it at the end. I never looked at a brand new pair so i couldnt even guess what they are made out of.Ive made those before. They were quite simple, the way we would do it would be to cut 5 inch circles out of 2'' qt400 or ar 400 or 500, what ever was handy. Next make a 2 inch circle out of mild steel and then drill a one inch hole in the center. Have a 1'' pin cut by how ever long it needed to be, with a hole for the bolt. with the end beveled. Insert into the 2 inch washer and weld the bevel side. then put that onto the 2 inch thick circle and weld it to that, use low hydrogen. We would also run a few passes of hardface around the bottom edge of the base.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:As a western certified snowplow tech. Yes I went to western's snow plow school.I must have 20 or so sets of shoes laying around the shop. No one ever uses shoes around here. So half the people tell me not to put them on the plow when we install them. If you weren't half way across the country I would give ya a set. I wouldn't bother with hard facing the cast shoes. They are really cheap. The new one piece versions is cast out of some real crappy stuff. The older two piece ones (steel round bar shaft, case shoe) was cast out of good steel. They lasted forever. Now if you have a set of the older stamped steel western shoes, have at it. Its AR200 plate, just throw some hard facing rod on them.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:I have some old rod laying around that we used to rebuild the tracks on cats 30 + years ago will see if the numbers are still readable
Reply:I would hard face them, where I work we strictly snow blow on black top and went thru four sets of shoes in a season. Hard faced a pair and there still on a year after. |
