Hey guys.I am in school for welding and our next project is going to be an open root Oxy Fuel weld.  Any advice you guys could give me ?  It is on 1/8" material.  I havent attempted it yet.My instructor claims Oxyfuel is the easiest type of welding to learn and that most people fail Mig welding.   Thats quite the opposite from what I have read on here....
Reply:The instructor is just trying to get you into a good attitude.O/A welding is very good practice for TIG. Except TIG uses a lot less heat.

Reply:I agree with him.  I used to help the college I attended teach an introductory welding class in the Ag department.  Mig was the most failed section of the course.  O/A is not difficult, and once you learn it, and understand what's happening it will help you on all the other processes.  open root on 1/8" material then you probably will want to melt the edges and form a "keyhole" and work down the seam.  It will take some practice to get your heat, speed, and technique right, but it will give you full penetration.  The problem we had with migs is that alot of the welds broke.  The mig process is easy to lay a nice looking bead, but that doesn't mean that it's penetrated worth a flip.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Craig, for a retired desk jockey and a hobby welder you have A/O welding figured out. Just kidding. Acteylene welding is considered old school now by all the young guys it seems. I've had a few say "Oh, you mean brazing". "No, I mean welding. Get your goggles and watch". A/O welding is really easy to learn. It only produces 60% of the heat of arc welding so you have a lot more time to see what is happening and take the proper action before the puddle falls on your foot. It is a very versitle welding method and the cost is reasonable. Just slow compared to  the arc welding procedures and has some drawbacks due to warping and grain growth in the weld deposit that arc welding doesn't have.
Reply:Oldtimer: Thanks. I try not to fuel internet inaccuracies. I did forget the part about the puddle dropping on your foot. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Miller Syncrowave 250
