i noticed a few inches of that outer paper-like covering is mising on a section of the transformer in my old arc welder- what can I wrap on there? or should I just let the copper winding exposed in that section?  thanks
Reply:pics??
Reply:Would liquid electrical tape work ?
Reply:pic is out of my pc abilitys..I'm way behind times. not sure on liquid tape? I image transformer gets too hot maybe? I don't know thou..
Reply:Take a look at varnished cambric tape 3m makes it.
Reply:Is the exposed part in risk of coming in contact with anything?  Can it be disconnected in order to slide something over it?
Reply:It is pretty well safe as it is a huge diameter winding on the transformer part of the welder. nothing should touch it as it's in the case..but I better cover so if I ever sell..It would be easy access to cover as it is right on the outer edge. Just not sure what. I'll look into that product mentioned above. I was also thinking on fiberglass tape..kind used to put over butted ends of two sheets of drywall..it would protect but also maybe discinpate some of the heat thru the pores? They use fiberglass on muffler/exhaust repair so must have high heat tolerances?
Reply:If it's a transformer without a sliding core, you can buy electrical insulating materials in a spray can that are made for such jobs. Some are epoxy materials, some are 'varnishes' and most will soak into existing paper or cloth which is falling apart and stabilize it. If there is a movable core, this can sometimes still be done if careful not to 'glue' the core to the rest, otherwise it's best to disassemble everything and treat the parts being careful not to get too thick a layer or have drips form that interfere with the core movement once reassembled.I once used a similar material for "potting" a coil I wound, it having 31 seperate wraps in two different banks (each wrap with a glassine covering), each wrap or layer using 300 turns of  #41 copper wire, and the insulation needing to withstand multiple tens of thousands of volts; it was for an old B&S model AP engine. IIRC, I used a vacuum to fully impregnate the coil.
