can this welder do aluminum? and will it be good for fixing up frames?http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/tls/2861185432.htmlIf the conversation isn’t money, then I’ll see you later.
Reply:480 single phase?  I would try going to miller for some literature on that unit and see if you can change an internal setting to run on 240.  Not a lot of residential areas have 480 available.
Reply:It's 460, so short answer is "no" unless you have 460.I assume you are talking motorcycle frames (EXPLAIN your questions in DETAIL when asking).Price is also too high. It's close to worthless due to the voltage.Describe exactly what you want to do, in detail, for best guidance so you don't get ripped off!
Reply:Stay away.  A few bad points about that machine (I almost bought one).  It's nearly worthless because of the voltage requirement.  You can get alot nicer machine on the cheap if it's 3 phase.  Not that many buyers have it.  Also, the converters make that electrically inefficient transformer even worse.Secondly, the duty cycle on that machine is horrible.  IIRC, it's like 20% at 140 amps.  Max amps are 160.  Thirdly, it's a Sine Wave machine.  So your Aluminum control won't be what you want it to be.  I give guys like Zap an S-load of credit for being able to lay down consistent beads with Sine Wave machines.  I can lay down consistent beads with my dynasty at this point.  When I switch it to sine wave (and that's a modified type) my beads are all over the place.  They just don't behave the same.  So stay away.  If I had 3 phase available, I'd give $300.   PS:I hope you're not thinking of fixing aluminum motorcycle frames on your own.  Just NOT a good idea.  If you're willing to take a ride,, there's a Synchro 250 on my local CL with an asking price of $1250 with a cooler, foot pedal and finger control.  And it's been SITTING there at that price.Last edited by Drf255; 02-24-2012 at 05:01 AM.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:The deal on the syncrowave sounds like a better deal, but just for future referance you can always buy a phase converter if you get a screaming deal on a 480 machine, and all you have is 220.
Reply:A phase converter? That's not what he will need. If he buys this machine he will need to buy a transformer that doubles the 208-240 line voltage to 460-480 volts. With the amperage requirements of the welder this won't be a cheap transformer, especially not if it's a 3 phase welder. It could cost 2-3 times what he wants for the welder.CharleyMiller MM252Miller Bobcat 225NTMiller DialArc HF / DIY Cooler2 Victor O/A TorchsetsMilwaukee 8" Metal SawMilwaukee Dry Cut "Chop" Saw 5 Ton Wallace Gantry Various Grinders, Benders, etc.
Reply:ok guys thanks, someone wanna point me in a good way to one! im looking for one for bike frames, atv, dirtbikes etc etc.If the conversation isn’t money, then I’ll see you later.

Reply:Everyone ASSuMEs he is talking motorized vehicle frames but it could be a crocheting frame for his granny's crocheting club.

Reply:weldermike,Doesn't sound like you've got the background/electrical knowledge to be giving advice on electrical issues.A phase converter converts single phase power to 3 Phase.  That's what you have.A transformer converts voltage, not phases. That machine, being single phase to begin with, needs a TRANSFORMER to step the power up from 230V to 460V (not cheap).Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Should add that there is a difference in performance between phase converters, static and rotary. But, given the OP, sounds like neither is what he needs.Pass on this deal
