One of the buildings on campus is getting a new set of elevators.  I have been scrounging all the nice metal parts I can get my hands on.  I'll post some pictures later of the metal and parts I have found thus far...it's good stuff...but, I was just messing around with some of the stainless parts I found, 'cause it's been about 8 or 10 years since I have welded any stainless...So, I welded these plates into the base of a lamp...maybe or into a stainless night light or a door stop...I am not sure yet what it is.  Maybe I'll just throw it in the fish tank and let the fish swim through the holes...who knows.  Just thought I'd post um and let you help me decide what this should be. Reply:Neat stuff!!   I like the fish tank idea. There are no small projects
Reply:Those are some pretty beads, but it'd be prettier still if you hit 'em with the flap disk and then polished the whole thing.-Heath
Reply:Thanks for the comments.  I half wanted to see if I still knew how to move a bead on stainless.  I had a couple of false starts before things came back and I am still not completely used to my new used pedal.  I had forgotten how fast you could move once the two sides started to flow together.  BTW, you can probably tell, but these are done without filler.  The material is about 1/16th and of unknown alloy.I'll need to get a flapdisk and do some polishing if it does end up actually becoming a lamp or something like that.  I do think my family needs a reminder that the money I spend on my hobbies isn't totally ending up on farm equipment at my dad's place.  I still have a couple of 5 gallon buckets filled with similar fixtures...some with round holes, some with single triangle holes...all stainless and speckled with 30 years of latex paint.  Would carburator cleaner be good at removing paint and other crud from these dohickies?  Cleaning them with a wire wheel actually approaches real work.I feel a large stainless piece of yard art coming on.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:i got a guy at work the hates to weld SS, but thats couse wen he dose it comes out black not shinny like yours smithboyChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:"The darker the beer, the shinnier the beads," I always say...but, maybe that's for Mardi Gras.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:The wife says put a nice candle in it and put it on the picnic table....  And then offer to cook dinner by it's light....and you might get some more welding stuff....  I got my TIG machine that way.....
Reply:Hey! Now I see where you're going with this...candles+wine+dinner cooked by me = [fill in the blank] from the wife.I've heard this works, too!!!It's good that your wife provides a bit of confirmation, though.  I'll try that...Does Praxair or Airgas sell candlesSmithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:i think they do  but folks run when you bust the valve off acetylene bottle just for good light....oh and the fire dept frowns on this practice tooIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Never hurts to get the other half's input on these subjects....  The only problem is you have to do bigger and more extravagant gestures when you want bigger tools...Now I just have to figure out what to do so I can get that mandrel pipe bender....I don't think bbq ribs is going to do it for that piece of equipment...I'm thinking about taking a job with airgas....totally out of my "normal" profession but it would be very interesting to say the least.  If I take it I'll recommend that we put in a real nice candle section....  You gotta help out your fellow welders whenever possible...
Reply:ok,  so im at work.  Ole boy tries to sell me these candles his wife sellingI says, tell ya what glenn you go home tonight take a big @ss ****, and start lighting candles and tell me whch one you find does the best job of clearing the odor ...ill buy that one  IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:LOL....I remember as a kid going to my grandparents ranch for the summer....I couldn't figure out why they had strike-anywhere matches in the bathroom....Chile...methane....ka-boom....
Reply:IT-Welder,It's my opinion that there is a huge untapped market in MAN-type stores.  They all should have sections dedicated to appeasement gifts for the wife/significant other.I could see it now...you have sales that coincide with mother's day, valentine's day and the like...have cards, flowers, CANDLES, and all kinds of gift baskets with lotions, loofahs and aromatherapy stuff.  If you buy $1000 in MAN stuff you get a gift basket full of goodies for the wife...Name the store BILLY JOE's SECRETS...By the way, on a related note...who the h*** thought it was a good idea to put the Southern National drag racing finals at Commerce, GA on MOTHER'S DAY!!!!  D*** FOOLS!!!  How much do you wanna bet, somebody's mother has infiltrated the top levels of the NHRA...How could this have happened...I guess in the midst of all this port security and foreign terrorism fears, we have completely opened ourselves up to INTERNAL SABOTAGE!!!Next thing you know, ESPN will be running cooking shows.Last edited by smithboy; 03-20-2006 at 10:10 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
