Reply:Yeah what Brocc said. With what you described you still need a machine, hoses, a regulator and welding helmet. For starters. Reply:1. Cheap2. Tig3. AluminumPick any two of the three.... but you can not have all three...
Reply:Actually, I dont think "cheap" and "aluminum" are ever on the same list. You can use any DC power supply, like a stick welder, to do scratch start tig on ferrous metals, or copper alloys. You just need an air cooled scratch start tig torch with a gas valve on the handle, and a tank of argon and a regulator or flowmeter. An aircooled torch like that is about $150, and you can use a mig regulator for the argon or buy a new one. So yeah, you can do some tig welding cheap. Its harder to do scratch start than HF start tig, and depending on what you are doing, you might have a shorter duty cycle when the torch gets too hot to hold, but it will work fine.Aluminum, though, is a whole nother ball game, and about the cheapest way to do that is a spoolgun.Tig welding aluminum means an AC welder, and unless you are really skilled, an HF unit, and probably a water cooled torch. |
