These are a few pictures of a bulk bag lift beam I built. This is used to unload bulk material into a bagging machine. This replaces a scary arrangement that was made from lumber. Originally it was designed low profile because it was going to be bolted to the top of an i-beam that had limited clearance. After it was painted I changed my mind and welded on a lift eye so it could be hung from a portable gantry.  This has proven very sturdy and we've used it quite a lot.Picture 1: Checking how the bag hangs and preparing to install the strap keepers.Picture 2: Checking the lift eye. This was cut from 1/2" plate.Picture 3: The completed lift painted.Picture 4: Lift in use. Attached ImagesLast edited by forhire; 03-16-2010 at 02:57 AM.
Reply:Looks good to me.  I've built a few myself, but they were free standing and designed to be moved with a forklift.  Ever seen one of those bags full of chopped copper?  It's purdy...My name's not Jim....

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWI'd love to be near a few bags of copper that size! Just think, thats close to a square yard of scrap copper... Think of how much that would bring me as #1 SCRAP! Just load that right in the back of my truck please...  On second thought I'll take 2 more, they're small..
Reply:dang forhire.. you're pretty dang talented.. looks really clean and well built.. keep up the good work.. america needs people like you... craftsmen..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:Originally Posted by BoostinjdmIt would be worthless as scrap.  IIRC it went from where I worked directly to the places that turned it back into wire.  It was chopped to the point of being like copper sand.  If you showed up to a scrap yard with it I'm sure the cops would be close behind.  I think the bags were only about half as tall as the one forhire pictured and weighed maybe 3 tons.  So it would take a pretty stout truck...
Reply:Looks good. I like the tapper, on the top mount. That is not going to pop a weld.        Sincerely,             William McCormick
Reply:Very nice, I like the strap keepers and the gussets angled upward for reenforcement. Very well thought out and built."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Forgive my ignorance but why would you angle the gussets like that??????   Am I just missing something in the visual here???What is the difference between flat gussets, in this case 90* to the frame, and the angled gusset??Come try it out and stay a while.

Reply:nice design, but I wouldn't even know where to look for "split pea soup" green paint!!!  What's with the color choice?

Reply:It's even paintedInteresting gusset.  How much additional strength it added is a good question.  It most certainly added lateral strength, but maybe only marginally added to resistance to vertical loading.  I dunno  You certainly had severe height restrictions to deal with.A 1"or thicker spacer, with 3/8" flat welded to it, and the outer edges of the tubing (forming a bow), would also have been a good reinforcement on the side of the tubing in tension.  Then all you'd need to reduce stress on the right angle junction between the lengths of tubing would be a small vertically oriented gussetit's tough call Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
