What's up guys, I just had a question that I hope someone can help me with. I am starting tomorrow to practice 6g but didn't real know what I wanted to do. Now I know I gotta do the root pass, hot pass, fill and cap pass, but I didn't know what directions to go in such as uphill, and downhill for each pass? . Is there a certain order that you guys go by, or what the inspectors would rather see during test taking? . Any help would be great Thanks
Reply:Some tests will require uphill progression and some down. Depends on the job.UA Local 598
Reply:I usually run down root and hot pass, and uphill the rest, but i think Lincoln has a new low high that can be run down hill
Reply:I've been doing this for the pass 3 days. Bevel the pipe to 37* I usually put a 1/8 land and 3/32 gap. With the smaller gap I can easily drag 6010 in there. Sometimes you gotta whip it but you mostly drag it. If uphill start between 530-630 to start. Space out you starts so you won't have restarts in the same location. I try to point the rod at the center of the pipe but at a 5-10* angle back when I start keep the same angle but just roll your wrist so your rod is at a upwards angle on the sides. On the cap go lil slower and just make a small wiggle to space out the bead seems to make the cap more flush. Took me 3-4 days to really get it.
Reply:To the OP. Go ahead and do a 5p+ 6g downhill all the way out until you are proficient at it. Then move on to a 5p+(6010) uphill root and hotpass with 7018 fill and cap uphill until you got that down. I wouldn't worry about 70+(8010) or 7018 roots for now. You can practice those only after you are confident you can pass the 6010/7018 6g with an uphill or downhill root. When test for a company their weld procedure will set in stone your electrode you will use and the technique you will use (uphill and or downhill) If your wanting to be a pipe welder it is a must to be proficient at uphill and downhill welding as well as tig. Good luck
Reply:All inspectors will be different, uphill or downhill will depend on the welding procedure for the ticket you are doing. Just like every welder will have a different technique to weld that pipe. Just follow procedure and talk to the inspector prior to welding.... |
