Scored this sucker for free when the maint. dept replaced it with a crappy little chinese made press. The boss said I could have it if it was out by the end of the day - otherwise it was going in the dumpster. S-10 pickups aren't really made for the kind of abuse mine endures. Sure, it needs work, but hey - big ol 'Merican made drill press for free, that works? All over it! It's 3 ph, but I'll either swap out motors or try to convince the wife that we NEED a rotary converter. Heh - that might take a while. Attached ImagesJust another clown trying to be cool
Reply:Nice. Probably shouldn't be too hard to find a single phase motor that should fit. I'd have certainly grabbed that for free..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Don't go rotary. Go with a VFD and keep the 3PH motor. It will give you adjustable speed as well as your belt drive. You will be glad you did. VFD prices are very competitive with even the cheapest rotary converters.

Reply:Hmmm. The VFD option has me intrigued. I just read the VFD post put up a day or two ago and need to do some research. We have VFD drives at work, but all of our EQUIP is 3 ph, I wasn't aware of all the capabilities. Hey Duane, Ed I'll get a few shots soon - some before, some after (during). I stripped the interior and front clip this fall. I will eventually put a straight axle under it. Maybe a 396 or 409 & a 4 speed. I want to go all early 60's with it. It was my daily driver for 6 years, when I put the 350/700r4 in it. Now that I have a little more cash, I want to give it the kind of attention it deserves. I certainly abused it enough !Just another clown trying to be cool
Reply:Hey jinkzd. If your work tosses any VFD's that still have life, by de-rating the input current by around 2x (1.733 technically) you can run most any 3PH input VFD on the same voltage 1PH. Food for thought.
