well, not the fanciest or prettiest thing, but the first aluminum project for me, and a new welder to boot.. getting acquainted with the settings and all that jazz took a bit, but luckily i'm no stranger to TIG or aluminum.metal is.. who knows.. could be 6061 sheet, might be 5086.. i don't know.. used 100% argon, 2% thoriated, AAC @ 120-ish, 4043 rod, freq cranked to the max. machine is a (first gen?) everlast super 200P. car is an 80 or 81 VW rabbit, built by and for Kamei, a parts company in the U.K.. it was raced heavily.. was imported to california at some point and time, raced more, then i guess everyone lost track of it and it sorta fell off the face of the earth.. ended up in the hands of one of our customers at the race shop i work at.. bossman told him the car looked VERY familiar (as seen in many VW magazines thru the 80's) and the owner did some research and found out all about it. car runs in the GT-L class, which is a restrictor class.. bore minimum I.D cannot exceed 25MM. .thats the 2x2x1 plate with the hole you see in front. this car is still very mean, with or without the plate. 1600lbs and about 160hp.http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:Nice looking setup. Why not put the restrictor on the top to get air from the hood vents? The history baffles me because that car was built in the US because that is a NA front core support. Europeans did not get the wrap around turn signals.
Reply:I bet the front clip was repalced at some point in its past due to damage, and an NA clip would bolt onto a german made body.MAC WS1110 Mig WelderWoodworker HobbyistDelta 10" Table Saw, Delta Planer, Bosch and Craftsman Routers, 48" Craftsman Lathe, drill press, 1/2" hand and cordless drills, scroll saw, skill saws, jig saws, etc, and too many hand tools to list, lol
Reply:Awesome rabbit! Good job on the air box.
Reply:Nice job and you will only get better from here.
Reply:thank you for the comments and all. not sure too mucnh on the history as of yet on the car.. i planned on top-mounting the restrictor, then the plans cvame to be for a cold-air intake of sorts to be mounted to it drawing from the front.. Cabby, the car was actually built ( and raced originally) in the U.K... Kamei is a german car parts company thats still in business today, making roof racks and such for Vee dubs and other german autos. not sure if they had their own race shop. there were two cars built actually. a racecar (this one) and a clone that made its way around to various car shows with a stock motor. not sure wher that one is.http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:I know who Kamei is. I have a shirt someone made from a Kamei sticker featuring one of the race cars they had back in the day. I was big into VWs a couple years back. The shell was at least built in the US unless like stated before someone swapped core supports. Also it would seem that it also has been repainted, being a track car it would make sense because of getting banged up. From the Kamei cars I have seen they are usually white, yellow, orange and red.Should post up on VWVortex. Fair amount of Mk1 guys and also someone who have SCCA track cars.
Reply:i might just do that.. have to check on a turbo anyway i'm trying to buy..http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
