These are pics of a boiler room that I laid out and designed.  There are some interesting configurations there also. Enjoy.UA Local 598
Reply:hi, looks good. just wondering on the last photo where you used 2  45's {10" ?]with threadolet on bottom if 1 90 would have made it instead. I saw sprinkler fitters that would use a 45 and then 90 and back to a 45 but thats on the run. Glad to see those weld necks too. we got one guy that uses nothing but slip ons. In the old days some butterfly manufactures would not warranty their valves unless weld necks were used. Do you know the difference ? not being a smart a##. Besides that one slips on. Look at the gasket seating area of the raised face , the weld neck is noticeable wider giving it a greater sealing area, not to mention it looks more professional and is much more exact in prefab work. good job. it sad that all those pretty welds will be covered. Thats were i like  condenser water and natural gas, you put the best welder on it and everybody sees the art work of welding forever and ever. Not to mention they do not leak!
Reply:The last one was funny. Its 8 inch and we ran the line where they (supervision) wanted it, then all of a sudden somebody notices that we need to clear a roll up door that did not exist yet. Sorry guys, move that line. We could have used a long-radius 90 but that would have to be ordered and this was a hard money job so two 45's were used. We took a picture because I doubt we will ever do that again.I would guess that welding a slip on flange could distort the face and that valve manufacturers wont warranty because of it. Its my best guess. I can ask around though.UA Local 598

Reply:This is what I like.  I built my boiler out of sch 40 a106 seamless pipe 2,4,&6".  Is that what this pipe is?  What is the going price for pipe nowadays in seamless for these sizes?
Reply:Pics are of 4, 6, and 8 inch. I have no idea what it costs.UA Local 598
Reply:Thanks for sharing the photos! The art and craftsmanship is impressive. Very creative fix for for the roll up door. What size and type of boiler is installed? It must be pretty good size.
Reply:There were 3 boilers in this room. Most new boilers are really just large hot water heaters. The building is part of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory physical science lab. Each building had 3-4 boilers but no prints so we had to do all the layout etc. It would have been nice if the buildings were identical, which on paper they were, but the locations of many things were different and at different elevations which made it challenging. Thanks for the compliments.UA Local 598

Reply:Ah that makes sense. This is a hot water boiler system. I never seen so many butterfly valves installed. I am a boiler operator on a biomass boiler high pressure steam plant. You did a great job on the layout. It is always important to operators to be able to follow lines while learning the system.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Thanks,The boiler rooms in the other buildings do not look this good so I was especially proud of how it turned out. The others were so cramped, but the actual rooms were bigger than this one. My partner and I decided to put the headers above the boilers to maximize our space. Consequently, we are able to set the boilers and complete all the piping in 8 days.UA Local 598
Reply:Those on here such as myself that have worked around these boilers will appreciate how well thought out that is. I too was wondering about the 2 45's with a thread-o-let and many people don't understand the lead time sometimes needed on the LR 90's. Slip-on flanges have their limits, especially when smooth flow and corrosion are potential issues. That's darn fine work IMO.Last edited by regularfella; 04-24-2010 at 07:59 PM.
Reply:i too am shoked to see the butterfly valves..i prefer a gate valve for shutoff and a globe for balance..butterfly is useless for either... and regularfella, why does a weldneck  give improved  flow and corrosion performance?very nice work.
Reply:I could be wrong, but two slip on flanges face to face will have a cavity that can trap air. Trapped air can create a disruption in flow and current. Also an air pocket will form and you dont want that. Where there is air and water, there is corrosion.UA Local 598
Reply:Yes,  Slip on flanges will leave a pocket....  and if it's not welded around the ID water could get between the pipe & flange and cause corrosion....
Reply:it is  standard procedure on slipon flanges to weld both the "back" and "face"  to the pipe..

Reply:Weldbead, sorry for the late reply. Looks like the questions have been answered. I've seen butterfly's installed where money wasn't an issue at all and I would have used gate valves also?? Not sure why, I'll ask the guys at work tomorrowWHughes, you aren't wrong, UA text even states that you're NOT to use slip-on flanges when corrosive product flows through the pipe. One could also argue that the flow is also disrupted by the difference in ID between Weldbend fittings & Chinese/Korean/Taiwan pipe and fittings LOL,
Reply:if flowing past the butterfly paddle is okay for the flow, the slipon is not gonna hurt it at all..after all it's just a hot water system...
