Hey guys I have been building race cars for the past 12 years. Mostly mig and tig stuff but I recently took a job at a hydraulic company and they need me to be certified in stick. I practiced a few days last week and sent my test in friday. Its for aws 5f which is a pipe to a half inch plate. It has to be done in position which was a root starting on the bottom and going upo to the top on the right side then again on the left then another pass over top. I dont have too much experience with stick. They thing it came out good and I am waiting on the results. It was done with 7018 rod. I dont have pics of the actual piece but this a a pic of one of my practice welds. How hard is the certification? I guess the cut it and x ray it. Has anyone done it before. Thanks for any advice you can give me..
Reply:I dont know why the picture was so big. Sorry Let me try again. How does this weld look to you guys?Do you think I may be able to pass the test? Attached Images
Reply:i could not read some of the important details, but i think you talkin about the mild steel verticle up plate test . you have to run stringers , if it's an x-ray test . do not weave or whip or occilate the rod in this . if you do , you will probably get slag inclusions , and xray will sure show them. try to keep the bead (weld) going from bottom to top . do not stop mid way. You should start the weld at bottom on runoff pads & finish each bead on the top runoff pad. Good luck[SIZE="5"Yardbird"

Reply:haha funnyim actually working on my 7018 3g today in school, i was having some difficulty too. my teacher said for the root pass, and have your weld penetrate more of your backing strip than your bevels. then with your next passes, to the right and left of your root pass, using alittle bit of motion, upside down moon/cresent moon.im still having trouble, the feet of my welds penetrate deep and have little pockets of slag, im not sure what you call that, slag inclusions?
Reply:seems a little cold /convex, and some lack of fusion is visible..
Reply:Thanks for the help guys. I actually got my results today and I passed. This is a great site. Lots of good info. |
