I have a wp-9 and is wondering if it was worth getting. What is everyone's opinion on the Pyrex Cup Kit.Pyrex Cup KitThanks
Reply:Can't say for sure as I never used one. I understand that it comes in handy when you cannot see the arc in unusual welding conditions/positions. Glad I am not subjected to that kind of welding. I am sure it has its purpose/function as it wouldnt be available otherwise.Anyhow, I do know of a welder who bought one at a welding show. He used it one evening and hasnt since. That was over three years ago.
Reply:Going by how much crud gets on regular cups. I can't imagine a Pyrex cup staying clean enough to see through for much more than a few uses.
Reply:I would rather have a varied selection of different size cups and lenses to choose from than a single pyrex, for what I do. If you only have experience with one or two different size/type alumina cups, you may want to try a few different ones before switching to Pyrex. You list a -9 which implies you do a lot of very small detailed work. Have you tried just a regular gas lens combined with more stickout? What about just a smaller sized regular cup?-Matt------------------------------------------
Reply:Some of the pyrex cupa are designed to improve the gas shielding charachteristics by improving the residual "cone" of gas around the weld. Reply:Pyrex cups with gas lenses kind of defeat the purpose. If you really can't see, then just increase your stickout.
Reply:I use quartz cups on my Weldcraft MT-125 welding torches. They're great for small clearance where you can't get a normal torch head in. They take the heat great, don't fume up very much, and to clean them, you just soak them in some muriatic acid (pool acid) for about 1/2 an hour, and they're good to go again.Downside, really expensive compared to ceramic cups, and while they aren't as fragile as you might think, drop one from bench height, and you're gonna be replacing it.Regards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Thanks for the reply's! I was thinking about this for better gas coverage. I am not having any problems with gas coverage now, but was just thinking that this would make it better.
Reply:If you just want something with better gas coverage, then just get a gas lens.
Reply:Gas lense for coverage. But if your a tie in welder the pyrex is handy to have in the box, if your a cup walker then they do a very few welds (2-3) and throw away. I've used them maybe 4 to 5 times over the last many year's, they did the job when it counted, but I've gone through pretty much one per weld....I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:I never used one because the supplier told me if I drop it its broken. I drop things......I have many cups both gas lens and non for my tig. If I screw up a cup I just toss it. They are like .$65 each from welding depot . com.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor. |
