Hello folks, can't remember if I already included this here. On many occasions I have needed to make something mobile and yet the wheel locks on many casters aren't very user friendly or efficient. Here is a very inexpensive and effective design that might be an answer for some of you. This incorporates a single wheel, but, with a little bit of additional thought you could use 2 just as easily. Hope this makes sense and can be understood, it basically uses an offset sleeve to move the wheel up/down in a sliding tube configuration. Reply:So that raises and lowers via a cam roller affair? Looks simple enough. If a guy would save up scraps with that end in mind one day you'd have enough to do three wheels maybe. Two on one end and one center like you show. I did an ugly thang with two wheels, axles and a small scrap jack. Milled out slots and a whole bunch of hoops to jump through for the build. I like it now that it's done but couldn't recommend doing it my way. Yours looks good."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:I like that a lot, I'd have done it like I think you explained with 2 wheels.  Instead of just mounting 1 wheel at the bottom of the lift I'd have built an inverted T with a wheel at each side for some extra stability.  Anyway, excellent work.  Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:A perfect example of why I like to visit this site often.  Excellent idea and a great execution.  I have had a project on the go for a while needing something similar but just couldn't figure out which direction to go - this will help me finish it.  If you were local, I would buy you a beer (or other beverage of your choice)
Reply:Hello Fuzzydog, I'm glad to hear that this sort of design might work for your project. I also like the various forums and the ideas that others share. The old addage of "more than one way to skin a cat" certainly applies in the welding and fabrication world and it's nice when everyone shares a bit of their knowledge with everyone else. Have a great day and good luck on your project. Best regards, Allanaevald
