Hello all I would like to use3/8 mild steel barstock to fishplate a cast iron strutural pieceof, shear yoke . What rod, procedure would your recommend ? Thanks larry
Reply:More details may change my choice- NiFe 55.PeterEquipment:2 old paws2 eyes (that don't look so good)1 bad back
Reply:I would use NiFe99, or 99 percent nickel,it is easier to weld with and less likely to crack. Make sure you remove the skin on the casting. Preheat to the point when a black crayon marks white. Weld with stringers, don't weave. Let it cool slowly. If the part has been exposed to oil, then are preheat to just barely a glow. This will help burn some of the oil out that has soaked into the iron.Hickory
Reply:I almost always braze cast iron with low fume bronze. |
