So I am interested in getting a plasma cutter sometime in the near future but have a question. My neighbor's house is about 20' from my garage where the cutter would be used. Does a plasma cutter or a TIG machine with HF start create electrical interference within a radius of 30'? That is about the distance where I know they use their computers. They have an in-home business based on using their computers and I do not want to cause them trouble with my "hobby". They are really good people and treat us with respect, I want to do the same. I'm sure a lot of you may have tvs, computers and radios in your shops. Do they get affected when using plasma cutter or TIG?Fillethead
Reply:No problems here. Nothing with my phone, laptop, radio etc. Things are better protected now than they used to be. Remember turning on a vacuum and the tv would go blurry haha. Reply:Just get a plasma that doesn't use HF. Hypertherm, thermal dynamics, miller, Lincoln, ESAB no longer use HF in their plasma. If the TIG HF does cause problems. A ground rod next to the welder, connected to the welder case and any other metal conduits, building side panels will keep the HF in side your shop. The Miller syncrowave 180, 200 ect owners manuals have very good instructions on how to control the HF. Can be downloaded for free at millerwelds.com.
Reply:Actually.....Hypertherm uses high frequency start in all of its industrial plasma systems.... all of our machines with outputs of 130 amps and higher do have high frequency starting...and likely always will. The air plasma's (Powermax units) use blowback starting and generally will not create electrical interference that will affect other devices.Jim Colt Originally Posted by ccawgcJust get a plasma that doesn't use HF. Reply:My lincoln PT 275 drives tv nuts in ac, sometimes opens the garage door????
Reply:Whether you purchase a plasma cutter, tig welder or both. Be sure to THOROUGHLY read through the owners manual. The owners manual will instruct you on how to properly ground the machine to prevent the HF from doing any damage to your devices.
Reply:good info, thanks all. i'll look into the grounding and what the manuals suggest. |
