Well, it had to happen one day.  Been idle due to weather, and can't get into the field.  AND I RAN OUT OF PORN DVD'S  (Ever run one at 8x fast forward??.....Like rabbits on Viagra and Crank)Anyhoo.  I picked up a nice 4x5 1/4" drop a while back for a really good price.I've wanted a sturdy table for a while, and bein' porn starved, I figure what the heck. So, yesterday I got motivated. The legs and stuff are 3x3 11ga tubing. The only thing of interest, for those intrested in controling distortion, is the center under table brace.  It's not fully welded all the way around.  The welds are at a 90 degree angle to the main stretcher.  I don't mind if I slightly bow the stretcher inward, but don't want to put a crown, or depression, in the stretcher.  Welds paralel to the stretcher will shrink and pull the stretcher and deform it.Usual "persuasion" stuff too.All that's left to do is to mount the attachments for the wooden sleepers it will rest on, and attach the top and vise. Reply:Oxymoron: I think you were too distracted by visualizing porn going at 8x... as was I  Samm mentions (after putting our minds in the gutter) the top is 4'x'5'x1/4" thick.
Reply:We got a break in the rain around these parts today. Was able to attach the sleepers.  Angle iron welded to bottom of table legs, then the laminated treated lumber (4x4, and 2x4) was lagged onto the angle. After getting the top onto the stupid thing, it was time to call it a day.  Methinks I'm getting a bit old for this sorta thing All that's left to do is to tack the top down, and mount the vise.  AND NO.......THIS AIN'T GONNA BE MOUNTED IN A RECEIVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ONCE IT'S IN PLACE, IT'S NOT GOING ANYWHERE.  HERNIAS AREN'T ON THE PROGRAM FOR THIS DOOOOODSomebody will probably have something to say about the giant trees under the table  Put your mind at ease.  In order to get all pieces cut out of 10' sticks I had to make the legs 1 1/2 too short.  (Why I had the supply place cut them into 10's I'll never know.....I usually get stuff cut into 12's and 8's).  Final height is 36" at the top. Reply:You do nice work Farmersamm!  I like the industrial chop saw station also.  Were both projects done with the little Lincoln 225 in the background?
Reply:Looking good Sam.  Just don't be like me and let it get all cluttered up with tools and junk so you can't use it.One of these days I'm going to get a snap shot of the two shipping containers set up and enclosed to form a shop in Baytown (east of Houston on I-10).  Might give you an idea or two to get you out of that wet weather. As for those table legs, it's a bit of Monday morning quaterbacking but a couple pieces of that angle on each one could have extended them to the desired length.  The present method however will allow you to adjust the height if needed or desired in the future.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Sam, you should start an advice column ...."Dear Farmersamm, I have a wabbit problem.   Planted my vegetable garden a few days ago, I know enough at this point to cover up the seedlings every night.   However, the rabbits got pissed, and are now stripping my pepper plants and even the tomato plants.    Understand, this area from 100 years ago, was famous for watermelons, grow them, get them to the RR terminal, ship them to NY.    We still get volunteers, they taste like crap, even fully mature, wabbits ignore them, go for the good stuff, that I plant.   Zucchini, cantelopes, eat them down to the ground.   I cover them at night, they are now eating my peppers and tomatoes.  I talked to my neighbor, he got me a recipe book that included real meat, rabbits also.   My wife says NO, they are cute.   Apparently, it's ok if the dogs catch and eat a rabbit, not ok if I do the same.   Even the Mexican guys, out back, are laughing their asses off, wabbits for whatever reason don't like Jalepenos.   My options:get rid of the wife.   I can then sit out, in a lawn chair, and  blow them away with a 12 ga.   Yes, of course, I have recipes, just gotta pick the pellets out.    Is rabbit stew still good with lead pellets in it????Second, is rabbit stew worth it???    I can always cook it, tell her it's chicken, think that will fly????   Would she know the diffrence???Even if she does know the difference, do it taste good enough, she can ignore where it came from????    Please, farmersamm,,,,,,   I need to know.    While I likes my zucchini, is wabbit meat a valid alternative????    And how do I pass this off on my wife????

Reply:Oh, we got cats, too.    I keep telling her, feed them just enough to keep them around, let them catch rodents if they want more.   We got plenty of rodents to keep cats happy, but if you feed the cats too much, they just watch the rats mice and gophers run by.  We have black cat, gray cat, little gray cat, ugly cat, and about three more with no names.   No more real names, the dogs just tear them up.  There's a dairy about a half-mile away, continous supply.
Reply:Attached the table top today.I worried about using such a light top (1/4"), but the price was right. The top was welded to the frame using the following procedureThe weld spots were marked with soapstone for reference, and to resist heatThe weld area was preheated.  This is maybe a little unusual.  If I'm worried about distortion I like to preheat the area.  It's my feeling that the heat expands the metal in the joint.  Because it's "grown", some of the distortion will be negated.  Filler metal will always shrink, but if the joint is "bigger" it might be offset.  This might be totally flawed logic, or a complete waste of time and O/A, but it seems to work.  Maybe I've just been lucky when I've tried it.The welds were limited to no more than about 1/2" in length.  Just a bit more than the size of a tack.  And time was allowed for stuff to cool between tacks.  And welds were placed on opposite corners and sides of the table top to keep heat down.  I used the wire feeder because it offers more control in short welds, and the heat is "gentler".There was, as expected, some distortion.  Some heat shrinking on the bottom of the stretchers got rid of it.  EXCEPT FOR A MISTAKE ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE TABLE  I put a bit too much lift on the jack, and didn't bleed it off in time.  When shrinking, put tension on the metal, not too much, heat it, then in intervals release the tension as the metal cools.  As the metal shrinks you can exceed the bend you intended to make.  Slow small steps instead of giant ones.  My mistake put a slight crown on the backside of the table.  Now it has to be corrected.  The other three sides were ok.As in all stuff, start with the basics.  If the frame had been bad, the top would have been bad.  And if the frame had been off, you can resort to shims and other tricks to make everything planar.  It seems that the best tool I own is the "time out break"  Nothing is permanently messed up unless you permanently mess it upjoedirt..........the entire project was done with the little crackerbox, except for the final attachment of the top.  And if I didn't have the wire machine, the little crackerbox would have been used.  The Lincoln 225/125, and Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC are really versatile machines, don't count them out. Reply:Dammit Samm, can't you just "throw" something together without worrying about beauty, craftsmanship and perfection? I have a 5'x6'x1/2" plate I was going to make a quick workbench with. I also do everything outside. Anyways, I have two of these cutoff's from my pallet racking and was going to use these as the sides. And then I was going to join them together with two of these rebar horizontally. But YOU had to go and make this work of art of a work bench and now if I make it out of scrap like I thought I would, I will be ashamed to post it here!
