I have a question that one of you might be able to answer.  I got a Chinese argon flow meter cheap (probably to cheap now that I think about it) but the flow is indicated in l /min (the l is a script l which I can't reproduce here) not cubic feet per hour (CFH).So is this liters per minute?  Does anyone else have a flow meter with this kind of fancy font and is this what this means. Why they couldn’t just do, L/Min is beyond me.THX, CW

Reply:LPM - wow that's some serious metric system, I haven't even seen one of those here in Canada (outside of a hospital of course). That's about as useless as a metric tape measure - can get them here, always laugh at them... Fire!, Fire! Oh wait, that's my torch...Lincoln PT-225 TIGLincoln 175 MIG
Reply:liters per minute divided by .0472 = Cfh7/.472 =14.8 Cfh.I have this tester and this is where I got the info.http://www.arc-zone.com/index.php?ma...oducts_id=4915DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I know. The first to do with anything metric is change it to something useful, like inches. If metrics are so great why don't we change the clocks to metric.  Wouldn't hundreds of an hour be better, then we might branle to do away with daylight saveing time. But I'm still not sue if the script thingie is a l. The process of elimination says it is but it sure looks like it could be an epsolon (sp). THX, CW

Reply:Well, in larger factory's were the work is piecework, an hour is normally divided into 1/100 instead of 1/60.like this.0,25 = 15mins0,50 = 30mins0,75 = 45minsSaying that metric isn't useful?, it easier and more accurate than inchs.
Reply:Originally Posted by Oldiron2Well, not exactly.  15 Min.= 1/4 hour which is a common fraction not based on 10.The English system developed because the units were convenient for everyday use. An average person can detect a difference of about 1 part in 40; that is far from either 1 in 10 or from 1 in 100. Few measurements the average person uses in everyday life needs great precision; for example, telling a delivery man how far his driveway is from the corner or his wife telling her friend what she weighs.Welding, construction, scientific lab work and industrial applications are not considered 'everyday life activities' yet even the first two do just fine with the English system.

And having 12 of something that getting 1 of something else...what can i say.. old way of thinking?Just convert already, the US and Canadian currency system is already like the metric measuring system, since you don't need 120 cents to equal 1 dollar
Reply:So you are saying that a normal person cant tell the difference between 10meter(11yards) and 20meter(22yards)?
Reply:My "other job" is mechanic.  I think in both metric and inches.  Ya learn things after a while.1 mm = about .040" or the thickness of a dime.5/16" = 8 mm7/16" = 11 mm1/2" = just under 13mm9/16" = just over 14mm11/16 = 17 mm3/4 = 19 mmI know this because the wrenches fit.  and yeah, its about 2 to 1 for Cfh to Lpm.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:"Factory piecework??? NOT IN THE USA buddy !!!"Um, you might want to ask the guys that build Lincoln welding machines in Cleveland Ohio about that.  One million square feet, and everything is piecework.....Regards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Originally Posted by Oldiron2Not at all; that's a factor of 1:2, even noticeable by a drunk. What I said was the average person can discern a difference of 1 part in 40 which is about 2.5% but the metric system jumps from (1 part in 10) to (1 part in 100), both well outside that (1 in 40) range. The units just aren't convenient (for everyday use) compared to the English system.Although I can't cite any here, this fact has been proven by a number of good studies done over the years.BTW, how long is 0.23 hour in terms of minutes and seconds; my point about your comparison was that you picked four special cases which also fit another division method, and that except for those special cases, division by 100 was "unuseful".
Reply:Man am I ever sorry I said that.I too have worked in shops that work time in tenths of an hour but always thought the reason was if you were a minute late they could screw you out of five additional minutes of pay. Also, when we got blue prints in that were in metrics we charged the export rate and shipping costs.Well based on all of this discussion I guess I'll need one of those metric tape measures.CW
Reply:Please do sir.and i bet you can get a tape with both metric and inch¤If you got money, i've got time

Reply:metric system vs imperial system  In all seriousness though both systems have their good and bad. Far more factors with imperial- decimal is limited to 1, 2, 5 and 10. On the other hand the metric system has been properly thought out (see link) rather than evolving from various bits of various peoples anatomies

Reply:Ahhhhh the imperial system that's a different and very useful system.Back in the day when we went to the neighborhood bar for a gallon of draft we had an Imperial gallon jug which secured us 0.201 of a gallon more beer for the price of a US gallon. Now that has use!!!!!!!!!THX, CW
Reply:Since when did the Celcius/Centrigrade measurement of temperature become more accurate or better than the F scale?  If you use the Metric scale,  you can miss a change in temperature at which you body becomes uncomfortable.  Sure you can divide the degrees in to sub divisions, but if you have AN accurate system, then lesser subdivisions of the whole and primary unit of measurement should not be necessary.  Hijacked thread..Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Celsius or Fahrenheit, it is the same unit, its just where "0" has been calibrated at that makes them difference.Celcius has its "0" is calibrated by the temperature where water freezes. Fahrenheit  has its "0" calibrated by the total standstill of molecules in a substance or material. But like "hotrodder" says the metric system has been though out properly.but then again on this forum the largest majority members are from the US, so i am not going to argue this subject anymore. ¤If you got money, i've got time
Reply:the other post is wrong... i mistaked it for Fahrenheit for Kelvinand for reason i cant edit it...¤If you got money, i've got time
