Hello! Well I'm beginner in welding, but I became a request from my boss to write a instruction of welding process two pipes - F65 and X65 steel. Do I need buttering or other special operation? What kind of filler material do I need?

Reply:I just need the explanation why it's so stupid to weld it. Or just imagine that it's mandatory to use this material. I'm trainee so I think he is just checking me and said 2 materials just from the head
Reply:F65 and X65 (F is for forging) is fine grain thermo-mechanically treated carbon steel that is mostly used in gas transmission pipelines.Nothing too special is required when welding it.Just use the appropriate welding consumables. If you do a search for pipeline welding you will find welding consumable companies that have rather detailed instructions on how to do it.
Reply:Thanks! And what about the buttering?
Reply:No buttering is needed unless you are performing a weld on a live pipe for a hot tap.
Reply:Why does the idea of  welding on a live gas transmssion pipe scare the hell out of me?Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:Have done it many times. Last time it was this Monday but it was a medium pressure 6" API 5L GrB pipe so it was a pretty simple job.Welding a 24" X65 high pressure pipeline with a high flow inside is where things get serious...
Reply:And for those not familiar with a hot tap here are some vids to see what it is about.
Reply:Thx a lot, this information is very useful.
