actually yesterday was my first day of MIG, my teacher said that it is extremely easy, eaiser than flux core and stick, but when i first started i didnt really think is was that easy, the science behind it is really complicated and dialing in the machine was kinda hard, i finally got my machine dialed in and my instructor said "look at Mr. Taylor (taylor is my first name) because i got it to sound really well, he comes in without a hood or gloves and start welding with his eyes closed, i actually thought he was looking at the arc because im dumb, but it was one of the best welds ive ever seen. A STACK O' DIMES. but anyway when i welded a t connected to a lap connected to a butt, it felt good (no kickback or jerking) but when i looked at it, it wasnt too good, an tips for flat positioned MIG welding
Reply:Tips?  Practice and then practice some more.  If you know what it's supposed to sound like that's half the battle. As for your instructor, that's a really impressive display of welding talent but not too high on the 'setting a good example' scale by welding w/o hood and glove(s).Oh yeah - congratulations on your first day's accomplishments!MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:well this guy is a typical welder, hes very down to earth, (half way because he short) but he been welding for 20 years so he going to get kind of lazy on safety and he knows that i wont do that, but yeah he only does that to the best welder in my class, hes already told that hes going to take me and my two friends to skills when im a second year
Reply:also i was wondering what sand welding was if you know we were talking about it in class as a small talk conversation but i was copying some notes so i wasnt listening Probably should post as a new thread
Reply:Well don't take my word on it, but when you say sand welding I think of an automated welding process I saw once.  What appeared to be happening was sand was continuously being poured onto the welding surface from around the cone acting like a shield.  You couldn't see the arc, it just looked like a nozzle pouring a perfect stream of sand an a seam.  After the sand was blown away there was a thin layer of slag left on the weld (either from the sand, wire, or whatever I don't know) I don't know if a shielding gas was used in the process or if it was flux core wire.  Like most automated welding processes the weld was beautiful. And congratulations on a successful day of welding. Hope everything keeps going good for you.MikeConstans Fides et IntegritasLincoln Weldanpower 150 ACAirco Aircomatic MIGet CAV II w/ spoolgunMillermatic 30a wirefeeder
Reply:It sounds like you guys are referring to SAW(submerged arc welding), the sand in this case is a flux that is deposited on top of the weld zone and any that has not been used in making the weld is sucked back up to be used again.  To me SAW weld look very similar to shielded FCAW welds.
Reply:yeah SAW is the one im thinkin of
