So I use thin cotton gloves at work, and they usually last a day to a day and a half before i need a new pair.  My question is, how much dexterity, if any, do you lose by using a pair of tig specific welding gloves, and how often would you need to replace them?  the company i work for supplies cotton gloves whenever you need them, but i have caught a fingertip of a glove on fire  on more than one occasion!  haha its pretty funny, considering it hasnt burned me yet!
Reply:I haven't tig welded in 15 years but I would tig bare handed before I did so in cotton gloves. Matter of fact when I did tig I just used a pair of deerskin gloves, mostly just the right glove. Even if they didn't burn I would think that cotton gloves would be too slick to feed the filler rod.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:they grip the rod pretty well...its a really coarse weave of cotton thread, add a little metal dust from grinding and sanding, and they grip pretty dam well!
Reply:The good kidskin gloves don't hurt your dexterity much more than latex gloves.  I can sort change in my pocket with them on.

Reply:Yes good kidskin gloves are nice. If you do any real clean tig welding. I mean in a booth cleaner than your house then white cotton gloves are used. I mean like some of the tig welding they do at Lockheed Martin welding the access door shut on live rockets. Cotton gloves only, oil in the leather gloves can contaminate the filler. --Gol'
Reply:I always thought the problem with cotton gloves was that the weave was too open and allowed the UV radiation through so not much point in having them on.

Reply:I prefer not to use any! But if any I use thin "Tigmate" gloves made from dearskin. I am in Australia but saw on one of your websites a online store that had filler rod pens that  had a little rubber wheel on it that you rolled with your finger! Have any of you guys used these?
Reply:i try and tig with no gloves. definitely no glove on filler hand, and if im having a good night and not dipping the tung too  often, and the torch gets too hot, a light glove for that..that forces myleft hand to stay back away from the heat and feed the wire a bit at a time rather than move my hand toward the puddle and not inch the wire through my fingers..

Reply:ua3440-- iwas not aware this could happen.. sounds ouchy
Reply:UA440,I've never had the arc jump 'cross the filler metal, but that's probably because I don't brace my filler metal hand on the workpiece.  Like a lot of the others here, I don't use a glove on my left hand (filler), and on my right hand, I wear the Black Stallion 24D.  These are kidskin gloves, good heat resistance, they don't heat up and take a set like pigskin gloves will.  Only setback with the kidskin gloves, they tend to shed quite a bit when new, since they're a split leather rather than a tanned leather.  Roll up a ball of duct tape with the sticky side out, and squeeze it back and forth a few times, takes up the shedding quite well.Regards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Never had any shedding from my Tillmans.  They're smooth as can be.I think it would be hard for the arc to hit the filler rod, unless the back end touched something grounded, BUT, HF can zap it, and you.  Probably not dangerous, but certainly unpleasant. With TIG, I wear gloves for the UV protection, but they've also saved me from some good burns in the past.  I prefer something as thin and tight as an exam glove, and if I can sort change in a pocket, while wearing one, its got enough dexterity to TIG with. The pigskin gloves just remove too much dexterity.  Deerskin is soft and comfortable, but too thick to feel enough through (same thing goes for cabretta).  Kidskin is the thinnest hide available (except for maybe kangaroo, and I don't know anyone making welding gloves from kangaroo), and that makes a big difference.

Reply:lol i like the posts about the arc jumping to the rod...has happened to me a couple times, not fun...  when i first started tig welding, i got put on an older machine with a really old pedal, which unbeknownst to me or anyone else at the time, the pedal was stuck a little open...figured it out when i turned it on and went to change the tungsten, ZAP!  so now every time i use a different machine, i tap the tungsten against the work table first haha  lesson learned  luckily 99% percent of the time, im the same brand new dynasty 200dx!!!!!!
Reply:I'm one of the guys who would never consider tig welding without both gloves.  Whenever possible, I use the lower fingers of each hand for a steady rest.  That tube is going to heat up really quick.  Only as the last resort would I float one or both hands above a weld....just can't maintain the required precision.  Also, I'm not a fan of snug fitting gloves.  I find I can manipulate the wire/torch better with a loose/borderline sloppy fit as long as they are reasonably thin.  Never tried anything other then leather. Reply:I use the split deer skin goves for maximum dexterity (Black Stallion ultraTIG 35D L), otherwise I use kidskin. Does Tillman make a split deer skin TIG glove? I can't seem to find any.BTW kidskin is young deer skin.

Reply:i was struggling with feeding the wire in the left hand with kidskin gloved on. was ok to start with then my hand followed the wire in and my hand got 2 close.then i went to no glove on my filler hand, but couldnt help thinking of that UV stuff.now i feed the wire with my thumb and between my middle and ring ringer. that way i can stuff the wire in very quickly. Felt weird till i found out how fast i could feed wire without letting goG

Reply:Here are the ones I use from Black Stallion.http://www.revcoindustries.com/catal...uff-p-414.htmlI was just wondering if Tillman made a version of these?
