Setting up my miller 252 and wanted to get a better explanation on how to properly adjust the drive roll pressure.  The manual is pretty fuzzy on their instructions in that area. Whats a good way to do it.
Reply:The manual is fuzzy on how to ste drive roll pressure?  OK, what you want to do is tigheten the drive rolls to the point that when you pull the trigger, wire comes out of your gun.If you want to get fussy, just tighten them until you cannot pull the wire through the rolls by hand.Or read the manual slowly.
Reply:I like to start by lostening the tensioner all of the way so that no wire feeds through. Then pull the trigger and slowly ajust the tension until the wire begins to feed. Then i bend a piece of wire at the contact tip and ajust the tension till i just barely can't stop it with my thumb. --Gol'
Reply:Manual's instructions look pretty clear-cut to me ....  look here, page twenty, they even give you a little picture .....http://www.millerwelds.com/om/o230693d_mil.pdf
Reply:No wonder! I would get confused with the international sign for drive roller tension adjustment myself. Dang what is that curlie que thing thar?
Reply:yeah I looked at that.  Point at a piece of wood... rightIf they stated how far from the wood that would be nice  Thats the part I call fuzzy.
Reply:Questions such as this one are the reason that guys like Sundown III, myself, and several others don't think you should be attempting to build gooseneck  trailers or any other for that matter . If you can't set up your welder how in the heIl do you think your gonna build a trailer that aint gonna come apart and hurt innocent people traveling down the same highway as it is, that is if it even makes it to the highway. Make a garden trellis or something that isn't gonna hurt someone. DaveI am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
Reply:Good response Dabar39.Guess the Lincoln instructions on the 350MP you ordered a couple months ago were clearer. And you Chad, don't understand why members of the board questioned your capability to build a "large custom goosneck(SP) trailer".I got to admit though, it was kinda gutsy to come back on the board and ask questions of those guys you just finished calling "idiots".  I'm sure several of those "idiots" could square you right away, if they were so inclined.  Personally, I'm not.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Let's all take a nice big welder quaalude, and mellow out. You guys had very valid points, all well spoken in the last thread. He's now asking questions, and the least we can do is give him some decent information. Thank you very much guys. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:I assumed that any trigger puller could adjust drive tension without looking in the manual. I don't recall where I learned, probably just common sense, but I cup my left hand and let the wire curl in my palm adjusting so I just can stop it.Tim Beeker.
Reply:I will say this, It is possible to have only run an arc welder for the entire duration of a person's career.  Well in this case it is. I have run a Linc Sa 200 since I began to learn. Small 220v arc welder in the shop also.  I have run migs before but it was always someone else's who was just showing me how they run and trying to get me to buy one.So, to wrap things up, Yes I know very little about MIG welding and i WILL ask a lot of questions. So for those of you (debar and Sundown) who can't manage to let something go, or stay on topic. Just do me a favor and instead of wasting your time on my thread, help someone out on another. I don't want to see these posts on my threads, and yes im asking nicely. Also, I did send Sundown some Pm's trying to come clean on the bad subject of a thread a while back. He never responded and failed to accept anyones apology much less give one himself. So he waits till I start another thread and begins all over again. That is very childish and immature.
Reply:Your question is well founded Chad.  I have experienced countless wire feeders with over tightened rolls in industry.  The idea of only having slight grip on the wire is to reduce damage to the wire putting bits of metal in the liner.  Also if you have a wire stick in the contact tube and you are like so many short sighted individuals, the wire will keep feeding and double up inside the liner creating a birds nest.  I have experienced them so bad that I had to grip the wire end in a vise and pull on the gun lead to get the wire to come out.  Oh yes and I have seen liners chucked because of this as well as the shaft on the feed roll bent.  Basic rule:  Too light and the wire doesn't feed.  Too tight and you have a nasty bird nest or better yet you have to buy a new liner.
Reply:thanks

Reply:Ok here is how I do feeder tension, Point gun vertical at the recommended stick out just like you are going to weld the block of wood. With drive rolls loose, tighten them till the wire pushes the gun away from the block and tighten just a tish more. You be good to go. Doesn't have to be block of wood. Can be anything not connected to the work lead for the usual reasons. That should help you out, no muss, no fuss, Enjoy
Reply:Fred, Now that sounds like a plan.  If that was posted in the manual I wouldn't have even started the thread. As far as pictures..  Well my LWS didn't have a 300cf bottle so they had to order one in. should be here next thursday...  So for now I can't even weld.

Reply:Blame it on universal signage. Who would have thought a snowflake on a knob means air conditioning? Enjoy.
Reply:ChadwickZ71,You might want to follow this linkhttp://www.millerwelds.com/resources...llermatic.htmland open the video on welding aluminum. They show the procedure for a spoolgun but it is exactly the same for any mig gun. Have fun - DrBobLast edited by DoctorBob; 01-10-2009 at 10:34 PM.Reason: bad url on miller vieeo - replaced
Reply:There are a bunch of welders that don't know the CORRECT way to tighten the tensioner.  Most of the guys in the shop will have trouble with wire feeding and just crank the tensioner all the way down instead of making sure there wasn't a piece of spatter on the tip or kink in the liner.  Then it wears out the rollers and the bearings in the motor a lot faster.  I'm not saying chad is qualified to be building trailers (I don't know what his experience is), just making a point.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
