Reply:I shoot it with a single stage enamel I get at tractor supply. It's pretty forgiving. The booger is in the prep work. All great paint starts with prep. Gotta clean ALL that grease off the metal. The last trailer I built, I used a bedliner coating on the top (diamond plate deck). BEST thing I ever did.

Reply:home depot also sells rustoleum enamel by the gallon. If you have a sprayer, it is easy to do.UA Local 598
Reply:We use a product at work called Amerlock 400 primer and Amercoat 450HS topcoat. It's made by PPG. It's not cheap, but I guarantee it will last a lifetime if applied properly. You need to spray it using a pressure fed gun. (I bought one of the Harbor Fright units for about $69). I seriously believe it is better than powder coat. I have a factory built trailer that was powder coated, and it's coming off in scabs after 4 years. At work we have equipment painted with the PPG products that are still going strong after 10 years in a salt air environment.Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC (Sold)Miller Dialarc 250HFMiller MM251Miller MM200 (Sold)Miller MM130Miller Spot WelderVictor O/A rigMiller Spoolmatic 1 (Sold)
Reply:If you go the Rustoleum route, I've found that in my locale it is several dollars cheaper (gallon and quart cans) at Walmart than at Home Depot.  I painted a trailer a couple of weeks ago using Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer, topped with Rustoleum Hammered Black.  I thinned it slightly with acetone and sprayed it with a regular siphon feed gun.  I like the fact that it has some sheen to it, but still hides irregularities well with the textured finish.  It's the first time I've used the hammered stuff. Now I just have to see how well it holds up.  I don't know how it would stack up against the PPG stuff or tractor paint for durability.  Rustoleum is relatively cheap though, and readily available.  Touch ups are fast and easy with a rattle can. Only drawback to the hammered is that I haven't been able to find it in gallon cans... only in the quarts.Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
Reply:I use rustoleum on my jet ski stands & it's been great. Customers that store their jet skis outside & wash down their skis after riding have told me that the paint has been very durable.
Reply:If you want something thats really tough look into Epoxy paint from eastwood. Great stuff!
Reply:The Rust-Oleum is a good durable paint that I have used for several years. It will start fading after 3-4 years if the item you painted is left out in the sun. If you want to step up a notch in quality, DuPont Nason is an excellent choice. It comes in single stage and also a basecoat/clearcoat if you want it to retain luster longer. If it is a trailer such as a utility trailer or something that will be prone to scratching from chains, binders, etc., it does'nt make good sense to spend much more on premium paint IMO..............................."Look Good Doing It"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Rustoleum is a great product. And its worth every penny to go to home-depot. In hate going in wal-mart!
Reply:One thing I found with Rustoleum and similar paints is that they have a long cure time to become truly durable. Without curing ovens they take about a month to fully harden. The paint seems to toughen with age.A hardener can be added but once mixed the shelf life  is only hours.
Reply:I use Cat paint with great success. Of course your limited to Cat yellow, gloss black, flat black, grey and white. Maybe red too.
Reply:Tractor supply sells implement/equipment paint that can be mixed with a hardener. Goes on well with a brush and flows out level. Best application is sprayed. Only mix up what you need of paint & hardener as once mixed you have about 1 hours before the paint starts to harden up. I use this pain alot of farm & construction equipment and it holds up Very Well.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:I went to my local Lowes since we do not have a Home Depot and saw the Professional line of the Rustoleum brand. Sitting next to it was a Valspar latex enamel, has anyone use this stuff? It was cheaper than the Rustoleum and I like the idea of soap and water clean up versus thinners.AHP 200xMiller Trailblazer 251 NTMiller Legend AEAD-200-LEEastwood MIG-175Eastwood 40A Plasma CutterDillon Mk 5 OA setup
Reply:Also what would be the fastest way I could prep the trailer for paint? I dont really love the idea of X amount of hours going at it with a wire brush and I dont think that there is a blasting business around me that can handle a 48ft gooseneck trailer.AHP 200xMiller Trailblazer 251 NTMiller Legend AEAD-200-LEEastwood MIG-175Eastwood 40A Plasma CutterDillon Mk 5 OA setup

Reply:Well I have been at it hard for about a week total with 2 angle grinders and wire cups... damn are my arms and shoulders sore. I have the trailer completely gone over with them and am about to put down 2 coats of Rustoleum Professional line gloss back oil based enamel. I will post some pics once finished.AHP 200xMiller Trailblazer 251 NTMiller Legend AEAD-200-LEEastwood MIG-175Eastwood 40A Plasma CutterDillon Mk 5 OA setup
Reply:we have very bad rust problems here in east texas and close to the coast. i get a lot of trailers that need respray and i do as mentioned above - just a simple primer and top coat depending on what the customer wants. but before i paint anything i coat it in OSPHO - or phosphoric acid. it converts the rust oxide back into iron oxide - rustoleum is great at stopping rust, but OSPHO chemically neutralizises it.I break things for a living...
Reply:Here is the almost finished product... I still need to stripe it and wire it and put on my spicuity tape. Here is a couple of before pictures:And a couple of painted ones:AHP 200xMiller Trailblazer 251 NTMiller Legend AEAD-200-LEEastwood MIG-175Eastwood 40A Plasma CutterDillon Mk 5 OA setup
Reply:I knock the loose rust off and ospho.  sometimes I put two coats of ospho.  I will then take OOOO steel wool and knock off any loose stuff ospho lifted and then I will prime with a single part equipment primer or rustoleum rusty metal primer.  Lastly, I paint with a top coat cut with acetone and will coat it a couple times letting it dry in between coats.
Reply:Looks good, good  job.Working on cars and bikes is my hobby, learning to weld the pieces together is my quest.
Reply:The only problem that I have found using Rustoleum, as mentioned above, is that it fades after a few years. Mine is due to get paint this year and I'll purchase some single stage paint and shot it. That way I know that it will be UV proof.ChrisLincoln Pro Mig 180TMiller Spectrum 375
Reply:question.... I use tractor or Rust ole. but how do you people thin it??? I spray mine with gravity feed guns, but i think i'm thinning to much, but then it does not shoot good unless i thin at 1:3 ratio (or something like that........)
