Why is it that every welding table I see on this web site is made out of such heavy materials like 4"x4" square tube or round tube and 1/2" thick plate steel top?? I made a table 6 years ago from 1"x1" square steel legs on wheels with a 1/4" aluminum tob and it's been working fine. Attached Images
Reply:There could be a number of answers to your question that range from personal preference to necessity. Though your table fits your needs, it may not fit everyone elses. The total safe weight capacity of your table is obviously less than a table of the same size made from 4x4x1/4 with a 1 thick top.

Reply:my tables are so big because i put large things on them haha i have built an entire race car on them just roll them were i want them then level them to each other and you know that its not going to move.. but everyone dose different things with there tables. i like to have a steel plate so i can tack what im working on to the table but it would be nice to have an alloy top so it would be easy to keep smooth. has your top kept flat over the years? that's another reason i have a thick plate so i know its still flat.SIN CITY METAL WORKSvisit my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/devvon
Reply:A simple answer to your question is that it's to be able to handle either expected load on the table or built to handle the unexpected loads that will be put on the table. I've seen quite a few pictures on this site of people with excavator buckets sitting on their tables. After rebuilding a 5' bobcat front end loader bucket on my shop floor two weeks ago, I can tell you that I'm building a table big enough, strong enough and heavy enough to handle a bucket 5 times as heavy. I really never want to have to do that sitting on a concrete floor again.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow

Reply:If you chained down a piece of farm equipment on you're table and beat it into shape with a 16# sledge and pulled on it with a chain hoist until it was right, youre table would be junk. My table is 5'x8'x1" thick, framed with 12'x19# I beam and with all the metal drawers under it, weighs 2500+ pounds. It is just what is required for me to do all the different jobs I get.

Reply:like everyonesays - its all in personal preference - our shop doesnt have a welding table - we use our c&c table if it has to built on a table or we just build on top of jack stands - in my opinion welding tables take up way too much space - epsecially in my shop where we primarily build trailers and large agricultural equipment, but to each his own...I break things for a living...
Reply:I love having the welding table. Sooooo much better than welding on the floor, and I can tack things to it all day long (jigs, etc).Mine is probably more heavy duty than I need, but as it was said before, probably better to go stronger than not strong enough. As heavy as my table is, it makes a nice, solid platform. I have my vice and bench grinder hooked up to it (they are removable), and I have to say that it is nice to be able to crank on things in the vice without the table moving, and I have never had any issues with my bench grinder and vibrations like some others have.If I were to do it again, I don't think I would change anything on it.The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com -- |
