Some projects I want to build in the future require 1/8,1/4 and maybe 3/8" thickstock. I like the idea of using mig for the speed with the wire feeder.Is TIG alot stronger or just a smoother weld? Ive seen some pretty smoothwelds using MIG too.I was in the pass looking at a Miller 250 for MIG.I still have not decided which way to go.Does TIG cost more then MIG the thicker you want to weld or are they aboutthe same?
Reply:A mig welder that can handle that thick of aluminum will need hot start features, lots of amps, and it would probably have a push/ pull gun on it. Either way, you will need to make some HEAT! If the pieces were small, but thick, a 200A tig welder may do the job. I can weld tabs and brackets up to 1/2" thick with my invertec 205. But we are talking a tab-1" wide, by 3" long, by 1/2" thick. Beveled and 2 passes to weld it. I would be better off to use a bigger machine, but for small stuff like that, I can get it done right. With that said, I could NOT weld a plate say 12x12x1/2" thick of aluminum. It would not get good penetration. DavidR has a 350A mig monster. He could tell you that it would be an ideal machine for mig welding that kind of stuff.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Most of my stuff will be in the 1/8 to 1/4" thickness but would be good to havea unit that could handle up to 3/8".How think can TIG and MIG weld aluminum and steel aswell.I may need to do some steel up to 3/8" too.
