Shopping Cart turned in to a welding cart

My first welding projectI didn't have the cash right now to make a welding cart but a small food mart closed down near me and I saw shopping carts in dumpster. So pick the best one out and cut it up and welded it. It's not the best looking welds but I am a newbie. The cart is strong and it wheels around easily. Question I have is sometimes when I weld I see dots after. I bought a cheap $40 auto dark welding helmet from harbor freight and was wonder if it's the cheap welding helmet thats causing me to see dots from the welding. I have it set to the most sensitive setting on the helmet. Should I go out and buy a better welding helmet? Any recommendations on which one to buy? I think homedepot and lowes sells a $100 lincoln helment. Is it any good? I dont want to spend much more then a hundred bucks. Anyway I hope you all like the cart. Reply:Speedglass makes a great hood too.  That's what I have and wouldn't trade it.  Can't remember how much it was, but when it comes to safety it's kind of hard to put a price on your eyes.  The cart looks good - I was just talking to somebody over the weekend who had done the same thing.  If I'd have seen them in the dumpster I'd have gone and gotten all the wheels off them I could - wheels are expensive and you can always find a project for them.Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250

Reply:Cart looks good...  I have the same Lincoln helmet from Home Depot and get spots on occasion as well. I would say a little bit is from the delay of it going from light to dark, but I am not sure how quick it is compared to other good helmets so I am not sure if that is just the nature of these things or not... but I have noticed it moreso from when I am welding something that ends up glowing so bright it is hard to look at, but not enough to keep the lens dark so it brightens and causes me to squint a bit.I would say it's an okay helmet... I am happy with it for now but my biggest complaint is the lack of adjustments, like the delay-off to keep it dark. Reply:until you can spend $250 or more for a good ad hood, get a  $40 huntsman/jackson and get a few different shade lenses   to try..i personally prefer a gold #9...learn to see the molten puddle..you cant weld at all untilyou can see what the puddle is doing..get a few spare cover plates too they get scratched and you cant see..and good luck.
Reply:Thanks everybody. Well I think I'll spring for a good helmet this way it's the last helmet I'll have to buy. I was thinking either speedglas or the miller elite. Is there a big difference in quality betweeen the two???Share your Knowledge!

Reply:well i live in appleton wi where millers plants are so i actually got the miller elite for a steal almost free lol. anyways at school and anywhere I would go around here all runs miller only products pretty much. and everyone that has the elite is very very very happy! they either have the elite or a hobart(cheaper miller) but I would say 90% of students and 95% of pros have the elite around this area. there is one company that pays for their guys to have the speed glass with the resperater and everything and they are happy with them.so either elite or speed glass i dont think you will be going wrong
