7018 open root ?

Hey all,So how many on here have done 7018 open root welds on pipe ?  Currently in school doing my Journeymans block of training and we are doing roots in 6" sch 80 pipe with 7018 in the 6G.  Much smoother than 6011 or 6010 roots.Journeyman / Red Seal Welder (What a useless test)Miller CST 280Miller XMT 350Miller 12vs XtremeEvolution Evo 28 mag drillEvolution 380 Dry Cut saw

Reply:All my pipe welds were 6010 root and 7018 fill and cap. Granted it was very limited and only done at school. I personally hate pipe. Reply:i am just a hobby welder. i do much better with a 7018 open root with  minimal land(almost none ) and gap than trying to put in a clean bead with 6011..the grinder never lies..
Reply:We certify with 9018 and 309 open root on pipe. I prefer 3/32 rod, land and gap. Proper amp setting is critical, too much and you blow it out, not enough and it won't penetrate through.
Reply:Open root with 7018 was done in British Columbia when the DPW#1 was in effect, about 20 years ago or so. I would use a 3/32" land and gap, and the root was welded with 3/32" 7018 on straight polarity. Testing was done by bending coupons to 180 degrees, on the face, root, and one was split open along the weld to do a visual. Six coupons were taken from each test pipe.Just my $.02 worth................Bgbkwndo.
