Started building new base for saw.Definitly nothing complicated.Old base had motor mounted on 3/32" plateoff to side of saw.Wanted base to be narrower and more rigid(motor underneath). I decided to miter the corners of the 1x1 angle as shown .Picture shows legs tacked inside before welding. As convienient as steel angle is,joining it at corners creates some problems.I've tried different coping  methods(torch, sawzall, bridgeport)at work over the years, but never did enough of it to get good(fast) at it. I think I will try coping pieces with my old shaper to fit inside angle for motor mounts. Any good tricks out there for joining angle at corners?More photos to follow soon. Reply:You are cutting your angle iron too short.Cut the angle in one cut to the length you need. Both legs should be cut at 45 degrees.
Reply:Cutting entire width @ a 45 would make a sharo corner which would have to be groundto fit inside another piece of angle.First photo shows leg assemblies tacked.Second one shows how leg assemblies are joined with two horizontal pieces over top.Third shows cloe-up of corner.(not great photos)I could have built this in any one of many ways, I  THOUGHT laying pieces on top of each other (fillet welds) would be easier than butting them togrther(groove welds). Reply:Made coped joints in angle using shaper.Comes out square and accurate, but is time consuming. Not for the professional. Attached ImagesMiller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:Nice looking corners and T-joints jpump5.  I like the 'set back' so the corner fits into the bottom of the verticle angle without grinding.I've done 45 mitered joints too but this is how I usually do mine with a 3" air cutoff wheel.  Goes pretty quick.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Duanne's examples are very nice! jpump5 is wanting to join 3 pieces into a corner and have it be strong and square, that's why the cuts are short, to leave room for the third (vertical) member. That ought to get the job done, nothing wrong with that. Remember to share some final pics when you're done, eh? City of L.A. Reply:Duanep55-You've got a good fit-up there for a  freehand cutting wheel job.Looks like it must be a good sized welding table too, judging by the size of the legs. That steel plate you see between my shaper and my lathe is actually my welding table/welder cart.I have a REALLY small shop.Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
