I'm just wondering if anyone besides me has had trouble with sellers on Craiglist or Kijiji reneging on deals?  Twice now sellers have posted a welding item.  I've contacted the seller via emailc and offerred a lower price to which they agreed... then silence - nothing, no reponse to further emails, no return phone calls.  Example #1:  Lincoln Idealarc posted at $600.  After a couple weeks of email exchanges, seller changed his posted price to $400 then agreed to sell it to me for $350; we were just discussing delivery/pick-up details... then nothing - no response to my further emails and did not return my phone call.  Example #2:  Oxy/Acet regulator set posted yesterday at $60.  I sent the seller an email offerring $50, he agreed. I followed up with an email to discuss pick up details - no repsonse.  In the evening, I sent a second email, "What's happening?"  No response.  So what's the deal?I can only guess but It seems like the seller has second thoughts, maybe decides to hold out for his posted price or maybe finds a buyer at the original posted price and sells to them?I'm a firm believer in the first guy at the door with the $ get's the item - been burned too many times by phone-call no shows.  However, I will hold an item for a prospective buyer for an agreed upon time - after which I am free to sell it to someone else. What I am seeing here is different; guys committing to a sale then ducking out! What price is their integrity?  $50 or $10? IMO Pretty Darn Cheap! Any experience or recommendations on how to handle this?Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Hey Rick,You make a mistake by telling the seller what you would be willing to pay. Never do that. Make arrangements to look at the item, test it to insure it is functioning properly, & then make your offer. Generally, with money in hand with you, & a sell to the seller who may not sell it at all, you win. If they don't accept, just move on. I have picked up some sweet deals that way, & usually when the seller sees you walking away, he knows you're serious & starts guessing if he wants to lose a definite sale. It has worked for me.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. ShopMobile UnitFinally retired*Moderator*"A man's word is his honor...without honor there is nothing.""Words are like bullets.... Reply:I'd say Yorkiepap and Wirehead have summed it up well. Long-distance "chiseling" of petty amounts puts the deal at risk, don't do it.Also, it's tough for a seller to turn away a ready-cash buyer to wait for the Phantom Lowballer, who's already been chipping away at the asking price before an inspection. Besides, by long-distance offering the buyer commits to a price that still may be too high and also softens the seller to possibly accept just slightly more from another prospect. If an item is enough of a deal to warrant dealing long distance, then, as an incentive to  the seller to wait for you, it's better to go the other way and offer more than the asking price. Also, up your odds by getting on a good deal  right away; that may require immediately "wiring" money. Weeks of e-chatting over a few bucks just weakens the would-be buyer's position.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 10-29-2011 at 09:22 AM.
Reply:The Yorkiepap approach is the way I do it.  I've gotten some good deals that way.
Reply:try selling on craigslist, that will change your tune.
Reply:You should try driving a fair distance to look at an item, only to find the seller had someone come over and buy it while you were on your way to see him at a prearanged time and he knows you are comming a long distance.Sucks, but in some ways I can't blame them. Money talks, and I've waited for enough people who said they were on their way and never showed. It would be nice it they'd give you a call ( I always give them my cell number and let them know I'm driving say 1 hr or more to get there) and double check you'll be there when you say before selling if they've agreed to meet with you.I won't drive that distance unless I'm serious about an item and say so up front. I ask that they hold the item until I can get there at the prearanged meeting time with a small amount of fudge for travel issues like finding an address in an unfamiliar area and unexpected traffic problems ( I'll also call them if I run into a big issue like an accident on th eturnpike that bottles me up so I'll be late so they know what going on) I come with enough cash in hand to pay the agreed price if I feel it's worth it, and often a bit extra for other goodies they may not have listed yet. ( picked up a nice 2' pipe wrench when I went to get my air acet rig cheap. They guy knew I was serious and was willing to deal.).No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I don't drive long distance for Craigslist items. I don't negotiate price by phone or email.I show up without cash on a day where I can get cash from the bank. I tell the seller I don't carry cash because "that's the way I do business". They are fine with that since they'll get paid cash anyway.Ive had issues with scammers a couple times on kijiji, it actually took me a few emails from them to clue in. Reply:I don't talk pricing for anything I've posted on craigslist until the buyer is standing in front of me. I don't commit to pricing below my posted asking point. Personally, I get annoyed by people calling or emailing offereing half the asking price, without ever seeing the item. I'm not an idiot, I know what stuff is worth, I'm asking for a fair price on what I sell. If you want to lowball, keep walking. It's tough in my area, cause we're kinda out there, but patience pays off.

Reply:It is the craiglist game everyone wants a deal and you have to be quick to get the deals. Cash only and able to transport help allot. Reply:I guess I feed from the bottom...I've bought and sold many Welders on CLWhen buying, negotiate when I get thereWhen selling, negotiate when ever the buyer wants to.When buying,I ask if they will hold it till I get there, if they won't, I don't goWhen selling, I will hold an item for a predetermined time, if another buyer calls, I will tell them someone is coming to look at it at x time, and if buyer #1 doesn't show or don't want it, I call buyer 2 back,  if buyer 2 is pushy, I'll call buyer 1 and let himmknow I have buyer 2 being pushy, and let buyer 1 make a decision.IMHO When buying/selling on CL, honesty is the bestI've been screwed twice,Always test machines before buying or you might drive 6 hours to buy a miller shopmaster 300 that's don't workAnd don't mail someone a moneyorder in decatur IL, you'll never receive your miller r-115 wire feeder.I scrapped the shopmaster and it covered the fuel and purchase price, so I was only out 15 hoursThe wire feeder was $130 ($75 for feeder , $55 to ship to me)I feel 99% of the people out there are honest, only 1% want to screw you.My last purchase was a Lincoln square wave 350 for $450, the guy was also selling a $1100 grill, I got the grill for $150 (it has an oven in it) always carry extra cash for the other deals. My $.04AaronLast edited by AMC724; 10-29-2011 at 10:45 PM.Reason: Damn auto correct
Reply:Money talks. and if a seller has someone lined up who's willing to pay full price, you'd better be willing to pay full price when you're there. typically its first come first serve if the price is the same. Sold my last welder that way on CL. had a guy lined up for a week out, then another guy wanted to look at it the next day. so he looked. Asked if I was firm on the price, and with another seller lined up, and a fair price on the unit I said yes. because I knew what I was selling was worth that, and I'm not strapped for cash. Never talk price over the internet if you've got to test something first. Cash in hand and a way to haul it when you're looking at it is the only way to go. just because you looked at it doesn't mean he's not going to sell it out from under you if the next guy shows up while you're out getting money, and the trailer. Being able to go to the bank is nice, but doesn't work for everyones  schedule. and if you're picking something up from the middle of no where, it's not worth it (to me) to have to drive back to the a bank to get the cash. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:if someone is selling something for $60 & you offer him $50 sight unseen for no other reason other than your cheap then you're automatically a PITA cheapskate in the sellers eyes before you even get there... if your chopping $10 off before seeing it then your probably going to want it for $35 when you get here would be the thoughts of many, if someone else is willing to pay the $60 then I would think many would just say screw the low baller too... I agree with all that say don't negotiate price till your in front of the item, just confirm condition & such before hand & make it known that your traveling to meet the guy & make sure you have his number & he has yours, make sure he knows your coming & commits to at least waiting for you... then in person use your judgement & what you see to negotiate furthermiller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....

Reply:yeah, I usually feel them out with a "whats the bottom line" type question maybe, "what do you really need to get for this?" no real harm in that & then also if the price is really right, I assure them that if the item is indeed as they describe then I'm willing to pay there full price no questions asked... this will encourage them to wait for you rather than sell it out from under you...  if I then see the item & it's NOT as they described, then I have a lot of negotiating room... "well I would have paid what your asking if it was as you described, but...." Reply:Once I drove nearly 3 hrs to Maine for and SA200, 1968 redface. I had answered a CL add earlier in the week and talked about it, The guy called me on Saurday and said that he still had the machine and had no calls on it, do I want it for 500, yes i do!. Off to Maine. When I got there the guy starts with the phones been rining ever since I talked to you, Then he gets a guy on the phone who says he will go 850. Now I got a problem, I have to harness my anger, and I really want the machine. Problem is it is on a trailer and the plan it to take it to a nearby freind who will load it on my truck with and excavator. So the deal is already delayed and sort of in a tough spot. But I finally said , enough, You called me, I drove 3 hours, and I am not hear for a Phucking Auction. I have the cash in hand, 500 and I want it now or I'm leaving, Take your chance the other guy is coming from 4 hours away for 850 and I'm out of here. That with a little right is right and I came in good faith and I ended up with the machine, lot of hassle, but with minimal work that baby was up and running and I won't part with it today.  Little finess and for the most part, not 100%, I kept my cool. And as always cash in hand is key.  Also feel the seller out, small talk, what kind of work do you do or are you available during the day? clue, not working, may need some cash for the bills."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:Hear more and more horror stories about deals that go bad. CL =dealing with strangers, some may not be nice people. Do not go alone, do not go into what looks like a bad or isolated area. I now take my sons who are getting bigger and older, Shot gun in truck , out of sight mind you and have your partner at a distance keeps and eye on the whole scene and makes anyone think twice about pulling something as they don't know who or what is in the truck. Also a big German Shepard is a nice touch with the window of the truck down and him hanging out watching intently,HaHa!   As above , polite but stick to business, do the deal, no life story. If it is well worth the price, pay it and get it. If it is not up to par, make and offer, don't want the offer I understand but if it doesn't sell, and you reconsider call me back. No hard feeling just not interested at this price.     When I sell something I try not to do it from my home, use altenate location, Sometimes If I get a decent feeling about some one or the item is hard to move I will do it at my house but I close my garages and bring it out front in my driveway.  If someone is to curious about the rest of my place or things I get a bad feeling it's do you want it or not, No, move on see you next time.  Usually don't like to deal with the foreigners that hardly speak english, mostly the Spanish and the Nigerians, or Middle East folks, Last time it was Polish which I am Polish, but if I can't understand you and you are talking price before you see the item I just hang up the phone. Now hear me out, I have no particular dislike for Nigerians, or Spanish but people who are fresh here from another land think it is the way of America to come and have a hardline on business and offer a third of what something is listed for. I had 1 guy call me, very little english and he kept asking about George Washington, Couldn't understand what the hell he was getting at, Then I finally figured out he was asking me how far I was, or for directions from the George Washington Bridge, NY city. Now who in the hell is gonna come 3 hours for a 250 welding machine, and also try to get it for $50.  On the other had I had a guy, spanish accent and rough english come for a snow plow for a skidsteer that everyone had offered me 3 and 4 hundred for and I just said no way. This guy came exactly on schedule, took 1 look at it , It was nearly new with the factory paint, I started to hook it up and demonstrate it and he said don't bother I know its good. He pulled out the cash, peeled of 9 benjamins and shook my hand asked me if I could please load it into his truck. I was so impressed I gave him back 60 and said pay your fuel for the trip, about 1 1/2 hrs each way.  Point is I like CL, There are good deals, and there are scum bags, don't use CL unless you can tell the difference and are prepared to deal with them."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

I only entertain and give serious offers. How can someone make a serious offer having never tested the item for sale. (7 days to get that)Ten days ago, the Seller offered to deliver it to my big city relative since he was going there anyway on this Saturday morning.  Friday noon everything was good.  Late Friday my relative got no response from the Seller as to what time the Seller was going to deliver the welder on Saturday morning.  My relative stayed home all Saturday morning - and the Seller never showed. Saturday night I send the Seller an email, "T--, what happened?  D-- was waiting for you all morning and you didn't show?"Sunday morning (today), I got this terse email response from the Seller, "welder is sold"I replied, "Well at least you had the guts to admit it... although I can't understand or condone the way you treated D-- and I - pretty sad.  T--, you have No Integrity."Yep, I just got f**ked and I'm none to happy about it. D-- said, "What A DICK!"Part of me says, 'Just forget it and move on.'Another part of me says, 'No, this guy wasted too much of D-- and my time by his lack of intergrity.  I want a piece of this Seller'. I must say that all kinds of crazy ideas have passed through my mind... as I do have his email and mobile phone number. Perhaps there are ways to get his email  address on several spam sending sites?  Perhaps there are ways to get his phone number on the call lists of those annoying cold-call vendors?Yeah, I'm really 'bummed' by this Seller - with 'No Integrity'.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

There's no sense getting steamed-up about people and things beyond your control, especially when you're not taking the reins on the things you could control. When you're contemplating a deal you need to make a decision about your level of interest:A - It's a hot deal and  I need/want  it, I'll drop everything to get it wrapped up ASAP. I still could miss but I'll do my best.B - It's a good deal, but I don't care if I get it or not. I know I could lose-out but I'll just let it ride and see what happens with my own terms and  offer. And after all, until money changes hands it's just an offer.C - I'd like to buy it, but at a low-ball price, I'll shoot low and let it play-out, taking my chances.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 11-13-2011 at 02:32 PM.

Reply:Rick, I kind of agree with others,  the old saying of a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush applies here.    you are dealing with Classified not a store or business that has a reputation or business practices to follow,   Someone probably showed up with cash,  end of story.  you call as a far away buyer,   RED FLAG for seller,  offer below asking price and expect it delivered, or held till u can get there days or weeks later.     If its way overpriced then you may get the deal,  but if its a good deal someone local will jump on it and show up with cash, no hassle for the seller. If the seller has spent any time selling via classifieds then they have dealt with a bunch of deadbeats not showing up or low balling TOO.  The person will most likely have no contact with you after this sale. The only thing I expect of the seller is for them not to sell it out from under me when i tell them I am on my way with cash and will have x amount of time driving to their location and be there at X time.    also if there is a problem to text or call and let me know.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Regarding deposits, it depends on the item.  Sometimes you gotta feel a person out too.  Like I just bought this Syncrowave from a guy about 1.5 hrs from me.  (He was asking 1475 for an essentially BRAND new machine from 1996.)  No way in hell I'm carrying 1400 bucks on me, that's asking to get robbed.I dropped 100 bucks on him because most people will not walk away from 100 bucks.  At the end sealed the deal with a hand shake, came back two days later with the rest of the cash and rocked on out of there.  I wasn't worried he would screw me, and I know he wasn't worried about me either.  Kept a decent line of communication, and like I said most people won't walk away from 100.  But unfortunately, a hand shake just don't mean much any more. Most of the time I won't even offer anything less, I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to haggeling unless things are misrepresented from the ad. Last night went to pick up some wheels for my car, come to find out two of the rims are cracked.  Seller says he didn't know blah blah blah.  Then admits that he did have one of them fixed at one point.  He was asking $425.  I says to the guy I was like, hey since you wasted my time I could only give you $50 bucks because now I gotta head back home 2 hours away with 2 wheels and 2 duds.  He eventually got to $120 which was fair in my opinion.JoeMiller 140 Autoset (2010)Miller Syncrowave 250 (1996)
Reply:Would never sell something for a higher price once I have accepted a deal, Deal is a deal once it's made in good faith should be rock solid, not the norm today however.   As far as offering a lesser value for something , sometimes things are way overpriced and even in good shape or excellent shape they are only worth so much, I judge it sometimes by how many are around and what the average is they are going for. Case in point, I have 2 Weldanpowers from the early 80's that I would probably sell, I think they are worth 750-maybe up to 11 or 1200 at most, maintained and alwars inside yet I see WP225's on CL and Ebay listed for 1800 and 2K , to me that's just out of the question.       And to clarify I have nothing against Hispanics or others, I just don't want to go through the whole sign language and sharade thing when I'm trying to sell things. I went to school from the time I was little and had to learn english, that is what I speak, It has been ,in the past the language of this land, and what I feel should be spoken here. That I make no bones about and don't care who likes it or not. Have a problem with english, get your own translator and have them call me or come with you. Don't want to spend 15 minutes in WTF land to find out you are asking me how far I am from the George Washinton Bridge? Reply:Rick, remember lots of these folk s are hard up for cash so when its standing in front of them, basically its a no brainer even if the "ill deliver it to your cousin's house" is going to pay a bit more.   in the end, gas, time hassle and possibly the buyer still trying to haggle more when u drop it off is just not worth it.   Think about it from the seller's standpoint,  a guy calls from several hours away want me to deliver it to a family or friend's house closer and will supposedly have all the cash for it when I arrive to drop it off.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I hear you you soutthpaw... but there was really no problem with $$ - price was set by seller and agreed to.  Hard up for cash - not likely, much of the deay was because the Seller was busy with dealines at work.  Gas/time/hassle - it was the seller himself who suggested that he could drop it off since he was coming to town anyway.  All was agreed and on track until until the second buyer popped up at the eleventh hour.  No, in the end, the guy was just a "DICK HEAD!"
