I have a PTO 45000kw generator and would like to purchase a diesel motor to run it, but I don't know what size I need. It will be used to run my house. I no longer have a tractor and would like to mount the generator and motor on a trailer and put a transfer switch on the house, so if the electricity goes out, I'll have backup. It's a 3 phase generator and I've contacted a company that can change it to single phase, and mount the transfer switch to the house. Here's a few pictures of it. Attached Images
Reply:Going by the size of the unit in the picture, I think you mean 4500 watts.  If it was 45,000 Kilowatts, it would be as big as a power generation plant for a city.   A 10 hp motor should run the 4500 watt generator fine.  To change from 3-phase to single-phase, just drop the 3rd hot leg from the connection. 4500 watts is not very much power to run a whole house.  You will be able to run a few necessary items but that's about it.Last edited by DesertRider33; 07-10-2010 at 08:02 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Are you sure it's not single and three phase? My name's not Jim....
Reply:I beleive you hit it right on the head desert rider. The 10 horse will have to be run through a speed reducer unless the is a way around the step up gear box on the drive of the unit of course. might be able to sell this one or trade it for a self contained generator of equal size pretty readily ?  maybe
Reply:Thanks for the replys and I know ya'll think I had a type-o but it is a 45000kw generator. I was a farmer and had to use the generator to run a grain dryer, grain bins and several augers until the utility company ran the electricity. I tried to take a closeup picture of the tag, but it didn't come out clear. When I called the company about the generator and switching it to single phase, he said something about dropping one hot leg, and making a cord to go from the generator to the transfer switch. Thanks DessertRider33 you just confirmed what he told me.Boostinjdm, the tag says 3 phase and then stamped 45000, to the right, single phase, nothing stampedThanks for the help guy's
Reply:You need to find out what speed the gen shaft turns and try to to get it to that speed or your frequency will be too low or high, which is not good for electric motors or some electronics.                                                                  MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:That would make it a 45 KW, not 45000KW generator, and not a 4500W generator. Kilo = 1000. Rather like this one:http://www.wincogenerator.com/cart.p...ategory_id=181Contact the people who made it for precise information:http://www.wincogen.com/Or find it here on their site:http://www.wincogen.com/winco_pdf_fi...files.html#ptoNice generator, by the way. Consider buying an old Dodge truck with a Cummins and a manual transmission to loot for a drivetrain. I'd love to have it to run three-phase welders and tools.Last edited by farmall; 07-10-2010 at 09:58 PM.
Reply:How about 45kw then which would be 45,000 watts? That would be realistic. A 45000kw would be 45,000,000 watts or 45megawatts. Reply:Cajun, check out my thread.  I believe it is exactly what you are wanting to do.  Read the whole thing, I think about all your answers are in there.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=32035My name's not Jim....
Reply:You're going to need somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 horsepower continuous to run that generator.  The gearbox is probably a step-up gearbox to spin the generator at 1800 rpm because 1800 rpm generators are cheaper than the 1200 and lower rpm units.  But, you're going to need to figure out how many poles it is.  A 4 pole generator spins at 1800 rpm, 6 pole is 1200, 8 pole is 900, etc...  If it were me, I would get rid of the gear box so you can run the engine at 1800 with the generator. If you buy new, a 60 horse diesel is probably going to cost you $10-12k.Last edited by 76GMC1500; 07-10-2010 at 11:24 PM.
Reply:I see a 120v receptacle and I see 120v printed on the lower plug.does that mean it already has single phase? Are the 120v receptacles wired in to the generator? Seems strange to me!tractor, loader.dozer, backhoe, and all the tools to keep em movin

Reply:According to thier website it requires a 90 hp tractor to run. The current 45kw pto generator on thier site is a 120/240 volt which means line to neutral is 120v single phase and line to line is 240v single phase. Only if all 3 lines are used will it be 3 phase 240v. I personally would put it on Craigslist or the like and sell it. Sounds like an interesting project but the transfer switch for this big of generator even used are generally expensive and are usually automatic style adding complexity to the system as well as expense. You might be able to get enough for just the generator to buy a smaller self contained unit with transfer switch from Costco, Home Depot, etc. If your just looking for a intersting project, disregard my suggestions.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"
Reply:It would be interesting. Farmers routinely use them for home backup. No point in an automatic transfer for a non-automatic generator. If you make a "universal PTO power skid" you can run all sorts of interesting stuff, but it will be much more effort than finding a used or surplus diesel generator on a skid. Not being mobile, weight doesn't matter, so you could start with a complete truck and mod the driveshaft with tractor parts to turn the generator. It will require a governor though, so find out if one is available that can be fitted to your engine of choice.
Reply:Thanks for all the replys and all the great information. I called a freind last night and told him what I wanted to do and he said he knew someone that could help me, and they would come meet me this morning.Well they just left and all of you know your stuff. Its not a 45000kw as I thought, its a 45000 watt 45kw, 3 phase I was told that the tag should look like this 3ph 45000  kw45, but instead I have this 3ph 45000 kw with no 45 stamped, so someone like me,would think its a 45000kw.:Sorry for all the confussion on my part. Boostinjdm, thats exactly what I'm trying to do. Great post, thanks.I 'm going to talk to my wife about getting another tractor instead. With all of this information and from what I googled, I would be better off. Man some projects are just so darn expensive.
