There was an inquiry on Jan 1, 2007 about Muggy Weld but I did not see any responses. What do you pundits and gurus know about this stuff:http://www.muggyweld.com/-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:ZInc based flea market "magic" material. Often sold out of the back of a 1987 brown or gray chevy van along with "magic" oils that somehow can keep and engine from seizing at idle. Zinc has almost no ductility, and in fact the use of a zinc based braze can embrittle the base aluminum in certain alloys. There is NOTHING that those flea market rods can do, that cant be done 100% better by regular aluminum brazing, soldering, or welding with a torch. I say this as someone who has had to RE-do repair jobs done with this stuff. Its a cancer that has to be completely removed along with the base metal to do the job correctly. Its a Gimmick thats all it is. However it does have one use....welding pot metal castings....using the right flux.
Reply:I cant speak for Muggy rods but I have used the stuff known as HTS 2000. It works every bit as well as claimed. The older stuff wasnt worth a damn but this newer stuff Ive messed with is spot on. And Ive been welding 25+ years and dont anyone who can make in field repairs on cast thats soaked oil and such over time as well as this stuff does. Just like 6011 and 7024 has its place in metal reapirs, so does this. |
