Hey Guys Here are some pics of a welding bench I am working on , the top is 36x48x3/8 thick plate with 1.5 inch pipe legs framed with 2x2x1/4 angle , this will include a expanded steel shelf on the bottom . What do you think Pat Attached Images
Reply:Looks good . Only question is it flat with all those welds on the top ?

Reply:Its flat , ill post pics tomorrow when I flip it over and put the expnaded steel shelf in place
Reply:I'm pretty sure why you did this, but something to think about in future projects...Your shelf is only as strong as that the circled ends. You could have built it from flat stock instead of angle and had roughly the same strength at the corners, so you lost most of the benifit of the angle the way you designed it. If instead you had run the long rails to the legs and then notched the side angle in so that the leg was flush for your shelf, you would have saved all the strength and accomplished the same thing you did the way you built it.In reality I don't see that shelf being a problem. However I have several very heavy tool boxes that if "dropped" on that shelf would probably bend that angle down a bit. A heavy box will have a tendency to get set down fairly hard on a shelf like that. Also if I loaded 2 or 3 of them on that shelf, theres a good chance they might get that to start to flex. Reply:Looks real good to me. I doubt you'll be throwing anything heavy on it. The shelf under my table catches all the little leftover pieces that I just can't force myself to throw in the scrap bin.  Unless your shop is large enough you'll probably want to put casters on it sometime in the future.                                         MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I appeciate the feed back guys , the only thing going on the bottom shelf is my welder and chop saw . Casters are getting put on tomorrow when I stand it on its legs ,ill post new pics when done

Reply:Looks good.  The rounded corners are a nice touch.  It might simply be distortion from the lens of the camera, but it looks like your skip welds warped it.  Is it flat?Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:Outstanding work sj pat!Jack it's the wide angle lens, horizontal lines above center bow up and below center bow down.sj, you prolly do know you'll need a spacer to stand on, and longer legs for the table if you get a larger gas bottle! Matt
Reply:Thanks for the reply guys ,    Jack , its distortion from a cheap camera   Matt , the bottle just fits with the regulator removed      Pat
Reply:Looks very nice but when I add crossmembers like that I always cope them out to get mass strength in the joint, never know what weight your table will need to hold in the future. I use my porta band or cut off wheel on a peanut grinder when I cope something like thatVisions SteelWasilla Alaskahttp://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...5&l=c32ed1320fwelderstourchessawsgrinders
Reply:I like it, where do you guys get a big piece of metal for the top? By me all I find is 1sq foot sections of steel for $25.How much did it cost to build? Close up pics of your welds? I have the same welder.
Reply:Got the top cut to order from a place here in South Jersey ( Joe Fazzios ) cost was around $110.00
