Stick- 1" Sched 80

Today my boss called me up said we have a job coming up 400 feet of 1" schedual 80 black pipe to weld... X-ray! The procedure sheet say 6010 root- 7018 out. No sockets no tig. The smallest pipe i've done is 11/2". Anyone have  any tips or advice?
Reply:Shouldn't be much different then your 1 1/2.  Feather your tacks good, and maybe work abit slower cause it will be heating up fast.
Reply:A question,  do you like to shorten your electrode by bending it in half when working on small diameter pipe?  Or do you use the whole rod?If the excess rod scrap isn't an issue, I find that the shorter rod makes for easier control, especially with 5G or 6G joints.  Hopefully you'll be able to roll a bunch of the welds, and make life easier for yourself.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Bending the rod isnt an issue. I called the supply house today they said they can get a 1/16 6010 5P rod, might try that.

Reply:IF YOUR JOINT IS X-RAY, chances are they (whoever is testing you will dictate how they want it done)BUT normally it is one heli arc root, one heliarc fill, 7018 the rest of the way out, also who ever you are testing for may NOT want a weaved cap, but a stringer bead cap instead. something to think about.BTW. do not bend the rod. the test tech doesn't want to see you do that. instead cutting the wire in half, is ok. hope this helps.mike.
