I use a standard shade #11 lens with no problem but I was wondering what was different with that gold stuff, I mean, what does it do? I can't find a "through the lens" picture that could show something.thanks for the answers.
Reply:It's been a while (10 yrs) since I used my gold plate. If I remember correctly the puddle and arc was blue and easier on the eyes. It was a glass plate not plastic, and used it in my Jackson helmet.
Reply:the gold lens I use makes the puddle red I like them in my fixed shade hood..
Reply:I had the glass gold lens and it made the arc blue. Couldn't get used to it though Sent from my taco using TapatalkGo Cards!!!!!
Reply:I have gold, plastic lenses on all my fixed hoods. I like them the best.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:I still use a 10 gold lens in my traditional helmets. I prefer them over my AD hood but the AD hood is easier to use when making a bunch of short welds and tacking numerous places. The weld area appears red but is clearer and more defined than with a green lens.
Reply:I have always been told to use one shade lighter with the gold lens. If you use a #11 in a green lens drop back to a #10 when going to gold.

Reply:Hello Leo, you've gotten a lot of good information from the various posters that have replied thus far. The responses where the view was a "bluish" tint could have come from using the AO Cool Blue lenses that many folks are trying to get hold of(no longer made), or possibly some of the newer plastic versions of that lense. There is a difference between the glass and plastic versions. What you see relative to the puddle with the blue lens is somewhat different than other types and shades of lenses. The red/blue tint gold lenses essentially give you the same peripheral view outside of your welding puddle as a standard lens that is one shade lighter. Hense, if you are welding with a "standard" number 11 lense you could use a shade 12 gold lense and see nearly the same peripheral view of the area around the arc/puddle. Theory being that your eyes will be better protected while affording you the same vision as a standard lense a shade brighter. Hope that makes sense. Much of all this still boils down to what your personal preference ends up being. I believe you've already heard a bit of this sort of thought from others responses. I have welded with too many different lenses, auto-shades, etc. to be specific about many of them and my likes/dislikes or the reasoning behind a particular choice. You will likely need to try a great number of different types and shades of lenses before you could really say which one/ones you really liked and why. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:thanks all for your help.I'll try to borrow one at school to get an idea of what it is then decide wether or not I like it.

Reply:I really like my gold lens for big wire and high amps. I run a shade 12 glass gold lens for running 3/32" dual shield anywhere between 360 and 500 amps every day. I don't care for a standard green lens with the big wire but use an AD for everything else.
Reply:Is there a difference between the gold "PLASTIC" lens compared to the gold "GLASS" ones? I have just the standard shade in my Jackson passive but wanted to try a gold lens too see what the difference is but I found them in plastic and glass, will the actual glass one view better? from what i can tell they seem to be around the same price so price isn't a factor.....I found THIS while looking around, its the 3M or AO safety cool blue but seems its discontinued? because I cannot find it anywhere. also has anyone tried the Hobart or Anchor ones?Last edited by Spar-X; 05-29-2012 at 12:45 PM.
