Ok, my chassis guy screwed up and welded my housing ends on crooked. He said he would fix it, but then he said the rear would have to be narrowed even more like 1/2" each side because he could not weld over the same area if he removed just the ends.I am familiar with welding and it could be true, but how much strength would actually lost from the weld bead? It was TIG welded.I am thinking I am going to carefully remove the ends not to affect the housing length and put new housing ends on in the same place.Has anyone does this before? I think my chassis guy might just be lazy. Thanks!

Reply:Time for a new chassis guy.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:i don't see why it couldn't be done. you will wind up running a gap where the weld was cut. if the gap is more than say 1/8" you could slip a piece of pipe inside it and use that as a backer and reinforcement.
Reply:Was it a mild steel or a moly housing?
Reply:Why not post this question with some picutres on Priate4x4...A lot of crazy axle fabricators hang out that forum, you will get a few more opinions from people that run what they build.    A call to Randy's ring and pinion for advice may also shed a little more light on your problem... What is this axle for?  You wonder; if you are going to build an axle, why not fabricate a few fixtures to keep stupid s&it things like this from happening...

Reply:Carnut, He should be giving you some money back. If it was my screw up I would be eating the mistake. Fix your problem or pay for it, MY MOTTO! and live by it.

Reply:Carnut68 - But why cut both sides to fix it??Did you previously post this issue and some pictures?Or maybe that was someone else?
Reply:Denrep,Because he screwed up both ends.  They are supposed to be at a 12:00 position with the rear axle one side was rotated clockwise and the other counter clockwise.  And no, I did not port this before with pics that I can remmeber.

Reply:Originally Posted by carnut68He said he would fix it, but wants to cut too much off the ends because he is afraid to weld over where he welded before.I feel his business is so slow he just does not want to spend the money for the ends and honestly, the other chassis shop is better equipped than him for building rear ends. Thanks for the replies.
Reply:opps..  sorry for the duplicate posting.  That was back when I got my car out of the shop...  I forgot I posted that...  Since then I got the guy to agree to fix the problem, but now he is saying he has to cut about 1/2" off each side and I do not want that.So I am bringing the rear end home now and grinding the ends off to preserve the housing length and taking to a different chassis shop that said they can put them back on without cutting the length down.I will see if I can get him to buy me new housing ends.  He is very hard to get a hold of and even if he agrees, it might taken him a month to get them.  What a mess...that's why I am ready to just spend the money to get it done and move forward, rather than wait on him.  I do not think he is working full-time at his shop.  I think he has another job now and only shows up in the evenings and weekends.
