Here is a new type of welding or bonding of materials on the human body. When in today to have stitches removed from the surgery that was done on my right foot. Nurse was going to redress the foot after the stitches were removed & make me continue to wear that surgical boot. The surgeon comes in a tells the nurse to use PERMABOND. He said  the permabond will seal against infection from the stitches being removed and will allow me to be fully back on my feet in 5 days versus the usual 2 weeks (something they hadn't told me before the surgery. The permabond also makes sure the wound doesn't split apart if too much pressure is applied too soon.I still have to use a Canadian Crutch on my right right  (5 days) when walking to keep some of the pressure off that foot. The permabond was a two part mix similar to epoxy, it comes in a single small tube which when pressed and needed makes the permabond that covers the suture area. The permabond is clear in color and eventually wears off the skin in about six weeks. Oh it also allows me to now fully bathe the entire foot. And he even said they make a permabond that is used instead of stitches but only on certain wounds and certain surgical procedures.  But that it couldn't have been used during my surgery because of the nature of the tightened skin on the foot under pressure when we walk. The surgeon knew I was a welder he called it Surgical Welding.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:Actually,Permabond is a surgical version of "super glue".  From what I understand,  it was tested for use in surgery after they found people using it for first aid.  Next time you cut your jugular, just whip out the tube of super glue and dab a little and hold for 15 seconds....Presto!  You're healed!Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:pssst, it's not epoxy.  It's pretty much surgical crazy-glue.Probably it was Dermabond, not Permabond. Not anything really new there, it was used during the Vietnam War.    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Yeah the surgeon did say something about that. I have had my thumb and forefinger glued together before using super glue to fix some plastic parts. I had to soak the area with acetone before it would come apart without ripping the skin off. I just got a kick out of him calling it Surgical Welding.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:Yep I remember VietNam I was in Pararescue 1970-1972. But we never had or seen any of the newer surgical methods of treatment those were reserved for the field hospitals that were running an assembly line getting wounded in and out as quick as possible. Front line was gather as many of the wounded as soon as soon as possible! Field dress the wound on some, patch up some, and pray for the others.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:We keep a bottle of super glue in our first aid box for cuts.
Reply:Oh by the way I have used superglue on some razor blade cuts. Dry the area 1st with some gauze then apply the superglue. Oh and yeah be prepared to jump in the air.Its just first time today I have seen permabond combined with an antibiotic ointment in a single mix tube and used to cover post surgical suture removal. I guess that is why the RN was going to first redress and cover the wound over the next few days of gradually pressure back onto the foot but the doctor went with the permabond instead.Last edited by specter; 03-11-2009 at 06:03 PM.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:smarts, huh??????
Reply:Although 'super-glue' and the surgical adhesive stuff are both cyanoacrylates, then are not -quite- exactly the same formulas.Regular super-glue/crazy-glue is irritating to the skin.  The 'surgical' versions aren't (or aren't as much).  Plus some other slight variations.Vet version is Nexaband, OTC first-aid version is Band-Aid Liquid Bandage.    The best laid schemes ... Reply:Yep I have some of that first aid antiseptic liquid bandage made by some company called MedTech (I picked the stuff up at CVS). And it works great but it sure burns like hell contains 6.7% alcohol, oil of gloves (smells good) and 8-hyroquinoline 1% (an antiseptic).Oh and for the rednecks in all of us Antiseptic doesn't mean doing away with your septic tank or placing antipersonnel mines in the septic tankCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:I think the surgical superglue would be akin to "brazing" while cauterizing is more like "welding". Reply:Not sure but here is a picture of my foot with that permabond on it.Oh I was thinking actors have the Golden Globe Awards so we ought to have a Golden Foot in the Mouth Award for certain folks on Welding Web that post the biggest mistake of the day or start a thread or post that creates the most arguments on the site for that day. Reply:Nah the stitches have been removed and all that covers the wound now is the permabond. The stitches were in that foot from 20th Feb until 11th Mar.But I still think the picture would make an excellent Golden Foot in the Mouth Award.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
